Would You Wear

Would You Wear a Belt Over Your Sweater?

agyness is back in black.jpg Belts are popping up on more than a few runways. But rather than holding up high waisted trousers, for S/S ‘08 they’re holding otherwise open coats and cardigans closed.

We first noticed this look on the Proenza runway, and yesterday Christopher Bailey showed it at Burberry for nearly every outfit.

This weekend we noticed a belt over an open animal print cardigan in the window of J.Crew in Rockefeller Center, so maybe the look is here to stay.

We’ve experimented at home but can’t seem to get the proportions right. Is it because our torso isn’t as long as Agyness’s? Or is there a trick to making this layered look streamlined enough for everyday wear?

We’ll keep trying but what about you? Would you wear it? How?

I think the trick is a super skinny belt, with a longer cardigan that hits either at or past the hips...

It helps if you have more of an hourglass shape to begin with. As for me, my waist is the thickest part of my body and I am loath to define its true dimensions, especially with the added bulk of a couple sweaters. I'll be sticking with floaty tops and long sweaters this winter.

Also bunching is a problem, not attractive

I wore a belted cardigan today! A long, slouchy cardigan usually works best, with a moderately wide belt (not too skinny or thick). I guess it also helps if your waist is fairly defined to begin with.

The belted cardigan is nothing new. Prada did it for fall 2004, showing belts over cardigans, jackets, and coats. I wore belted cardis that whole season and think it's a cute, easy-to-pull-off look.

The trick is definitly having a longer cardigan...i love the belted look. This fall/winter im putting a belt over everything peacoat, sweater, cardigan, you name it... i'm a guy so i know i will look different from the rest at least in america

i tried this look a while back, skinnies with an oversized kimono knit cardigan and a wide (but light weight) belt holding it closed. it did make my waist look thicker, but it still looked great!

Saw someone going into the Hearst Building today wearing a long cardigan open and wide-belted over a shell, a knee-length skirt and boots. It seemed a little much given that it's 80 degrees out, but it would probably work later in fall.

not a new style... i'm hardly 'fashion forward' and i've been pulling this look since last year... if you wear a thin enough sweater with it, it really works to define your waist, while still enabling you to expose the rest of your outfit- whatever it may be.

I did it the other day! i had a deep grey t-shirt with a purple cardigan. i used a black "studded" belt and it was really cute. the belt was your standard thickness but it was lightweight, not leather or anything. i'm in high school and not many girls are willing to try it. i got lots of compliments though, hopefully not reverse ones!

For the short-waisted among us (myself included), I find it better to keep the belt moderately wide and resting on the hips instead of at the true waist. Longer-waisted ladies are better proportioned to pull off a skinnier belt at their true waists. Yasmin Gauri comes to mind. Remember her?

this is seasons old. miu miu hasbeen doing it forever. It never looks quite as good on the runways though, but nothing ever does. thats why there are models, to make things look good, and make us want to buy them
