Zac Joins the Diffusion Pack

and I ate chocolate cake for breakfast.jpg Today we learned something intriguing:

Zac Posen is rumored to be preparing a secondary line.

We weren’t very surprised. Out of all the young designers, Zac is perhaps the most aggresive about brand-building. He’s already producing handbags and has signed a licensing deal for perfume, which will debut in 2009.

Instead of designing for a retailer like Target or Kohl’s, Zac will produce his own line in house, more along the lines of Marc by Marc than Proenza for Target. Maybe that’s a smart move; it seems like the market for designer collaborations with cheap chic stores is on the wane.

Simply Vera is already 30% off on the Kohls website, and it hasn’t even been out for ten days.

Ugh. Vera. Why?

I made a special trip to Kohls while in Minneapolis this weekend. Horrible! The clothes were just atrocious. Only teenagers with model bodies would be able to work with the cuts. The big billowy skirts, shirts and coats were not only two sizes to big they looked cheap and even DIY. After dropping two sizes I finally found a shirt I like, which made the 30% discount nice. Oh, and my mother loved the jeans, lol.

Why can't these lines be made at a mid-level price for Nordstrom or Macy's?

I though Simply Vera was way overpriced for the average Kohl's customer...

I was not thrilled with the Simply Vera selection. Everything was in a size 10 and above, which I guess caters to the average Kohl's customer, but not me. I liked a few of the pieces, but none of them were in a size even remotely able to fit my small frame.

That stuff (more close to rags than clothes) was vanity sized for jabba the hut. I tried the small violet blouse with the ruffled collar and it floated on me. It looks like I could have taken flight in that parachute. The only thing that blouse had going for it was the color. The belt was comprised of a strip of the material and a nylon flower. WTF?

That was the only small in the place. The pants and cardi's looked worse than a bargain bin sale at old navy. The tops with the gathered necklines (sleeveless) were so cheaply made and would make anyone about 9 mos. due. The balloon skirts were itchy and unlined. Of course, I've just eyed these things because of the lack of sizing. Curvy, larger ladies should STAY AWAY. Even though there are many size L and XL available, it will not flatter you.

Weirder still, the knit hats had a piece of cardboard in them, rendering it impossible to try on these bitches. The gloves were cute and some were extra long for those short sleeve coats, but at $45 for acrylic (don't even think of smoking in them)- no way. Too much. Don't even get me started on those purses.

It was all awful. After begging a ride to the suburbs to check out the line, I was exremely disappointed. Much more so than with the Libertine stuff from Target.

um, kohl's is pretty well-known for having constant sales, so 30% off not long after the initial launch is not so surprising.

Yeah, I was really disappointed with the Vera for Kohl's stuff. I'm not sure if this is a one-off, or if she'll do more clothes, but it was basically unwearable.

The material was cheap, it was all volume on top of volume, and it would be unflattering on all but the skinniest supermodel. Plus it was overpriced for Kohl's and for the quality.

It's funny, I really like how the ads (TV and print) are styled, but the clothes look AWFUL on the capsule website. Shapeless and plain.
