Adventures in Copyrights: Maddening!

Oct 29, 2007 @ 1:37pm

lost in translation.jpg We hope Steve Madden is sending Miuccia Prada a major Christmas gift, because nearly all his big shoes this season are directly stolen from her Miu Miu line,

Last week, we saw the dip-dyed Mary Jane knocked off, and now?

Reader Kate K. sends word that Miu Miu's Vernice Pop Pump, $525, has been translated - badly - into a Steve Madden creation.

He's kept the exact shape and pattern of the heel, but heightened the contrast of the colors, turning the quirky dye job into something closer to a clown shoe.

It's $129, which is really expensive for a shoe that we can't quite figure out how to wear - black tights and a sheath dress seems like the only option, or maybe wide leg jeans.

Maybe they could be worn with loud, stripey wide leg pants and a big red clown wig.
They look totally cheap.

I'd wear the Miu Miu's, though.

Steve Madden is almost as bad as Forever21 when it comes to copying ideas. Unfortunately I can't help loving both Forevs and Steven.

I'm getting a feeling people are only saying they like the Miu Miu's better just because they are Miu Miu's, not because they actually look better. They are both equally strange looking and appealing in their own way. The SM's have more colors.

Zara has a much more true-to-the-original knockoff, as it happens. :)

Isn't everything made in China anyway? Little do we know but maybe as we go up the food chain, both companies are run by the same big honcho~

I can't find the post re: dip-dyed mary janes. Would you mind re-linking it? I don't remember seeing the comparison- were the shoes ombre like Prada?

Eli, I agree. This is the second post that has slagged the Maddens and fawned over the Miu Mius. I like both pairs of shoes here, to be honest.

I don't like this shoe, but the colors on the original are better. Definitely less clowny. However, I would never pay $525 for a pair of shoes.

Jen - You're right, those boots are worse! They didn't even bother changing the colours or anything!

wow, those boots are an exact copy, but to be fair, the miu miu ones look as cheap as the steve madden ones.

Bakers had rip offs of these Miu Mius available on their website for over a month now.

Must be a popular topic and these two knockoffs are by far the most blatant thus far, I posted about both of these two specific examples on my blog on the 25th.
