This week's New York Magazine profiles Fabien Baron, the creative director of Harper's Bazaar, the man behind Madonna's Sex Book, and the creative director of the notorious Calvin Klein ads. The magazine applauds the French designer as the visionary responsible for the union of sex and design. Those designs, for fashion magazines, ads, and even products, used sex in what Baron calls a suggestive way. His designs are not only hugely successful but well-remembered because...well, sex sells. But the article quotes Baron as saying, "What's sexy is what you see in your imagination. It's not the dress; it's what you imagine behind the dress." Did he feel the same way in the 90's when a buck-naked Kate Moss was the face of CK Obsession? Because nothing was left to the imagination then. And as much as we love Kate, that might be the least sexy campaign she's been in. We tend to react better to the sensual power of suggestion over cold, naked sex when it comes to high fashion.
