On Sunday, the Times wrote a three-page account of Candace Bushnell’s snarl with Darren Star.
She wrote a novel, Lipstick Jungle, which will be made into a television series this winter.
He wrote a series, Cashmere Mafia, which will also be on TV, with the same plot (unfulfilled women with too much success), the same clothes (Heels! Blazers! And something quirky!), and apparently, some of the same locations.
Like Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort, it seems like only one can survive, and though the Times describes the story from Carrie – sorry, Candace’s – point of view, Vogue is going for Darren, and giving him the front page of their TV section.
It’s curious because Ms. Bushnell used to write for Vogue, but Patricia Field is the costume designer for Cashmere Mafia, so maybe some fashion angst was involved in their choice.
Both shows look good, but we don’t know if we can abandon Gossip Girl in order to watch anything else…

this excerpt doesn’t sounds like vogue is supporting the show at all
It’s almost negligible what the text says; if Vogue has a pleasing visual image on the front of their culture pages about a certain TV show, that’s powerful enough to give it support, with or without a glowing review.
They aren’t even coming out at the same time so I don’t see how they’d have to take sides anyways. I’m sure Lipstick Jungle will get mentioned once it’s premiere date comes closer.
It makes all of us in editorial so happy to know that you don’t read the words, you just look at the pictures. It’s what magazines are all about.
I just read the article in Vogue this morning and it struck me as being surprisingly negative, considering most of their television reviews tend to be neutrally objective. The author didn’t seem to like the characters very much. My guess is that Lipstick Jungle will get a pleasing photo and a neutral review at worst.
I only read the words in Hearst magazines, where you work ;) Come on, that’s not what I meant and you know it.
I know, I know. But, I mean, magazines don’t print bad photos of anything, if they can help it, especially not a book like Vogue. I would only consider a review like that good publicity if you subscribe to the Donald Trump style of PR. But after the Styles piece, I guess Darren Star will probably take whatever he can get.
What ever happend to Candace Bushnell’s BFF? You know the one she stole a boyfried from. She and this woman (tall burnette) used to be in Page Six all the time. Then after the boyfriend fiasco they, understandably, parted ways. Who was that?
Yeah, Joan Juliet Buck didn’t really care for this show at all. And I actually don’t think it’s going to do very well, you can’t just make another show just like Sex & the City and expect it to be just as succesful.
