Short Hair and Date Anxiety: A Discussion

cecilia m.jpg
While flowing locks have long been considered the feminine ideal, one of today’s hottest models, Agyness Deyn, is a standout because of her short pixie cut. Milagros Schmoll and Anja Rubik also booked more work when they chopped their hair, and Linda Evangelista had the most famous crop of all in the ’90s.

Fashion people aren’t the only ones who love short hair:

We have many guy friends who crush on crops instead of glamazons. They think short haircuts can emphasize a girl’s beautiful face.

But we also have a guy pal who can’t get over his girlfriend’s new haircut — a Winona Ryder pixie — because he says it “makes her look like a little boy.”

We see how such a dramatic haircut can arouse awkward feelings in a guy — and limit the ability to run his hands through her hair.

However, we also salute former and current gamines such as Jean Seberg, Winona, and also Rihanna for their confidence and bravado in pulling off a look that makes most women feel naked.

Still, we have to wonder about the Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams split. Was the haircut part of the rift?

I recently chopped nearly 10 inches off my hair in June, and as much as everyone tells me they love it, I'm kind of over it. In fall I wear everything big, cozy and over sized, and without a lot of hair to balance it out, my clothes consume me. I feel boyish :(

I adore my short hair. I've had it for years and I don't think I have the patience to deal with growing it out for fashion's sake.

not only does it make your face, particularly your eyes, stand out, but it also makes your accessories and fashion choices a focal point as well.

and none of the men i've dated have ever complained.

J - i feel exactly the same way. my hair was long, wavy, very victoria's secret angel. i chopped it ALL off for anja rubik's cut in june. i'm debating whether i want to grow it out or keep it short...as you said, i'm kinda over it too.

I also made a big chop last October, going from long, loose ringlets to a very flapper-esque bob. The short hair was fun and different but now I am really in mourning for my long hair. I got so sick of always having to put more effort into "styling" my hair, and getting trims ever 6 weeks because my hair grows quickly. It's finally reached my shoulders and I can't wait for the day when I can tie it up in a loose knot and feel polished.

I've always had short hair, ranging from a short bob to a pixie cut. I do occasionally envy a friend's gorgeous long hair but fear it would look weird on me. Guys have said they dug my short hair, but I don't know if they prefer it to longer locks.

I had very short hair for many years and the one thing that was really a pain was, as someone else commented, the need for very frequent trims. But I did love it. My feeling is, who cares what straight guys think about my appearance? If we dressed for straight guys, we'd all be wearing Hooters outfits. If you feel hot, you are hot, as far as I'm concerned. But those every 4-to-6 week trims are a killer. My hair is a little longer now for that reason!

I've always wanted a really angular bob (my face shape wouldn't tolerate the pixie and I'd look like I was 5), but as I am a ballet dancer, I have to be able to get my hair up in a bun. I've actually been seriously considering it lately, though. Perhaps at the end of the season...Oh, and I heart Cecilia.

Afer discussing the makeovers on ANTM, my boyfriend was like "whats the big deal, it's just hair?" Little does he know! I'm not sure I'd take into consideration how the straight male population feels about my hair either. Man, I wish I had the balls to go shorter, kudos to those of you who rock it. Anytime I go even shoulder length, I look like a mom (and I am a 21 year old who gets asked what highschool I go to).

If you like short hair, and you've got the face for it, cut it. It will grow back. However, I like long hair and have not had short hair since I was a child.

I think designers may like some short-haired models as a contrast to the longer-haired models. I do think longer hair gives a stylist more flexibility, though.

Me too. I had a bob last summer and it was cute, but I looked JUST LIKE my mother. Which is fine -- my mother is cute -- but I couldn't stand seeing her every time I looked in the mirror. I grew it back out.

I have to say, I get a lot more attention from men with the longer hair than I did the bob. I'm sure most of it comes from having confidence that I look cute, and not much to do with the actual cut.

Seriously the dumbest post ever. I'm sure Heath would break up with the mother of his child over hair.

Not to mention, I have a Posh-esque bob and when I grew it out for long flowing locks my husband begged me to cut it back. Short hair is chic and if you have the confidence to pull it off I'm sure you have no problem attracting men!

After chopping off long locks for a Jean Seburg/Mia Farrow cut, my hair is finally well below my shoulders. I kept a "new Kate" bob for a bit. I'd love to go back short but hate the grow out phase of awkward two inch ponytails and the aweful pseudo mullet.

If I want to emphasize my face now, I pull a severe bun.

Short or long hair does not make a woman who she is. It is what in her heart that makes her. From this man's perspective.
