We were obsessed with the J. Crew striped coat at left - it was too expensive (over $300), but still amazing. The swing, the sleeves, the stripes - we were into it. And you must have been too, because now it’s sold out.
But yesterday, we discovered it’s very available at Zara. The coat’s the same shape, length, and colors as J. Crew’s, but boasts a single-button collar instead of the double-breasted front.
Zara’s is cheaper by about $100, relatively new to stores. Meanwhile, J. Crew’s has been in their catalogue since August, and we wonder if this is the next knockoff frontier, when a mass brand pulls from another one that’s sold out of its cult item.
Meanwhile, the coat’s closest runway origin seems to be Gareth Pugh’s signature striped jacket from Fall ‘07… but without the plastic.
