Would You Wear

A Sequined Dilemma

tory burch sequined dress.jpgCarmen Electra bought a pair of gold sequin leggings last night, and we actually applaud her decision. In fact, for a moment there, we even wanted the black sequined pair. They’d look perfect with a long, white, cotton tank and our favorite silk Stella heels. And even though we stopped ourselves, (because really, how many times could we wear that outfit before we became the notorious girl in sequin pants?), we think they’re a healthy alternative to the ubiquitous sequin dress.

We can’t walk into a store, or flip through a catalog, or turn on the TV without seeing a sequined sheath. They’re everywhere, from Tory Burch, to Alice & Olivia, Forever 21, and H&M - in colors from hot pink to bronze. The look is often racer-back, almost always sleeveless, and very, very short.

They’re also very, very hot with celebrity stylists - at least if red-carpet sequins worn by Sarah Jessica, Sienna, Sharon Stone, Hilary Duff, and Blake Lively count.

On one hand, a sparkly dress could make the Friday night scramble to get ready much easier - just add shoes and a clutch and you’re set. But at this point, the odds are you won’t be the only one in the room draped in paillettes, and we’d rather stand out for our style than for the way the light bounces off our outfit.

Sparkles can be fun, but like most things, they’re best in moderation.

Would you wear a sequined dress?

(Halloween doesn’t count)!

yes, i totally would. i'll it during the day with a chunky sweater and knee-length boots and do a quick bait 'n switch for the evening by throwing on some platform pumps. if you style well, you can get away with anything!

Tory Burch definitely started that trend--when Catherine Zeta Jones wore her long-sleeved sequin dress in October of 2006. I love it, and would totally wear a sequin dress, especially if I could get my hands on the Tory original.

When I was a kid, I absolutely hated sequins, mostly because my only contact with them was in the context of aquamarine and hot pink 80s minidresses (you know, the kind with the long sleeves and shoulder pads that make you look like a linebacker).

The ones that are around today are much more aesthetically pleasing, but I like the miniskirt versions more. People in Northern California haven't really picked up this trend; it's a little flashy for up here. Even so, I bet that after winter break all the SoCal girls will come back wearing them.

I thought you were going to say that you abstained from the sequined leggings when you realized that anyone wearing that garment would have to walk very carefully or else risk making a noticeable crunching sound and leaving a little trail of broken sequins behind her.

I bought a gold sequined dress for £10, and I love it...I got called glamourous wearing it the first time (although I got called old in it the second time...since when was 24 old?!)
It makes me feel very festive! Although its not quite suitable for my works christmas party (christmas in monte carlo), I'll definitely be wearing it again for drinks with the girls.

Beyond words over them all. At first it was cute, but now it's done to death and it's time to move on. Although I do enjoy the black sequined leggings in the Bergdorf Holiday display. But I'd never wear them or want to see anyone wear them.

Last year I had the "serpent dress" from French Connection. It has horizontal stripes of bronze sequins on black with cap sleeves. I searched for months, and was so happy when I found it. It was a hit at my Xmas party. But now it is hibernating at the back of my closet until I can bust it out vintage- style.

However! The baggy white version from Preen SS08 that Agyness wore is the fierceness and I would definitely kill for it. Behold:

I've wanted some sequin legging ever since I saw one of the girls from the Hills wearing them in Teen Vogue a few issues ago. (Not that I care that someone from the Hills was wearing it, I just loved the way it looked! But then again I'm still dying for some silver lame leggings from AA...)

I was trying to find one of these for my birthday gathering because I wanted everyone to know it was MY birthday. I couldn't find an affordable one and then realized it was a bit too "disco ball" for me. The other thing was, unless you go for the big splurge, you are looking at shotty craftsmenshift on most. There are a bunch across the mass retailers (Bebe, Arden B) that were just atrocious.

Note: the one I was looking at was the BCBG (avails in white, black, teal) with the silk sash

If I see one more sequin dress on a less-than fab chic I will absolutely shit glitter. Enough already!

Back in December '99 I bought a pair of very expensive, very flattering black sequined cropped trousers by Dolce & Gabbana. I might have partied a bit too hard, but by the next morning/millenium a quarter of the sequins were missing. They still languish in my wardrobe, though I know I won't be wearing them again.

You know what else is annoying is that sequined Theory miniskirt that is everywhere. Has F21 knocked it off yet?

But, I do know from my retail days that sequins sell hella fast. We nicknamed the sequin trimmed rib tanks "crack shirts."

Maybe we as fashionistas should band together against the sequins? Are sequins becoming a dealbreaker?

But at least we all know what NOT to wear on New Year's Eve if we don't want to look just like everyone else!

So I just goggled "sequin leggings" and the first site that popped up was an online drag queen supply shop. Hmmm... I think that this clarifies the issue. Only fabulous skinny legged men in drag can make this work.
