A Wedding Dress With Pockets? Really?

Nov 27, 2007 @ 4:45pm

JCrew wedding dress.jpgEver since Renee Zellweger paired with Carolina Herrera, pockets and evening dresses have become a style staple.

Amy Adams proudly wore her pockets on the Oscar red carpet last year, and on the runways, Oscar de la Renta and even Lanvin had pockets on their girls.

But most American shoppers won't ever hit a red carpet - their wedding is as close as they'll get.

Maybe that's why J. Crew just introduced this wedding gown with pockets at left. But do pockets belong on a bridal gown? We're not sure.

We wouldn’t condone buying an $1,800 anything from J. Crew (especially when it can only be bought via catalog - seriously, who doesn’t want to try on their wedding dress?) but the idea of pockets is so intriguing:

You can treat your wedding like the latest disposable fashion fad, and seem so cool and above it all.

Or you can follow your mom's lead and pretend this is the only cool thing you'll ever get to do - a lie, for sure, but a fun one on the day when you get to wake up, have your hair done, have your nails done, have your shoes cost way too much on purpose, and (hopefully) have a really good party, then really good sex.

Anyway, back to the pockets:

Okay? Or terrible?

Wow, British Sci-Fi shows really are running fashion these days. A recent episode of Dr. Who illustrated how inconvenient it is that wedding dresses don't have pockets.

So yes, if you're going to get chased by killer robots on your wedding day, your dress should really have pockets.

i think this is a great idea as long as you can't tell she's wearing trendoid pockets

things the bride can carry in her pockets:
- a blackberry (blog your wedding live!)
- some trail mix to get you through the food-less day
- touch up makeup cuz you saved money not having the makeup artist follow you around all day
- your something blue.

It looks appropriate for the kind of shotgun wedding where the bride is already showing---significantly.

I had pockets in my wedding gown, which had a medium sized box pleated ballgown skirt. You couldn't tell they were there unless you knew, and they came in immensely handy, as I was able to stash my lipstick there, and also tissues.

Also, take a better look at fashion history ladies. pockets in formal dresses aren't so much a trend, as a resurgance of design feature that's at least decades old.

not so concerned about the whole pockets-in-formal-wear thing. seems rather handy (hehe) actually.

however.

extremely worried about the whole $1800 j.crew dress thing

unless they're bulky and weird, I wholeheartedly embrace the pockets! Plus, on a full enough skirt, your pockets could have breathmints, tissues, lipgloss, tiny camera... and that could free up your maid of honor to go and have another glass of champagne, rather that stick to your side as a purse-holding-attendant.

I think the pockets are very cute! Obviously it depends on the bride, her style, etc.., but it seems like a fun little extra punch to the dress.

Pockets in wedding gown (for the "crackberry" or for kleenex??) Catalog only? Are women today THAT busy?

Pockets totally give you something to do with your hands in all those awkward photos that you have to take with people you don't know. I'm putting them in my dress and also fully plan on using them to store lip gloss and to wipe my sweaty hands throughout the ceremony. They are like quadra-function!

My sweet 16 gown had pockets in 2000- not exactly ground breaking, but very functional
