Balenciaga Hearts Sci Fi Nerds (in Blazers)

balenciaga blazer j crew blazer .jpg Last night, we arrived at a friend’s party wearing our blue J. Crew blazer. A blonde party fizzer bobbed up. Her name was Elizabeth and she was British, a writer for NME magazine.

“I love your jacket!” she exclaimed. “Is it inspired by The Prisoner?”

The what?

“You know, The Prisoner? That cult TV show from the ’60s? It’s sort of like Lost, this secret agent is stuck on a mysterious island, and he only wears one jacket. It looks just like yours!”

We found a laptop and saw she was right - The Prisoner costume from the 1967 TV show looks like a perfect hybrid of the Balenciaga blazer and its J. Crew acolyte. It’s such a part of sci-fi culture that even The Simpsons have spoofed the coat’s long cut, signature lapel, and white piping.

What’s funny is The Prisoner is a huge cult hit in the UK and Australia, and it’s often considered the originator of Sci Fi serial dramas like Twin Peaks and Heroes - not that most fashion people will camp in front of their flat screens for those shows (or at least, they’ll never admit it).

Meanwhile, Nicolas Ghesquire claimed his inspiration for the blazer, and the rest of his Fall collection, spawned from a fantasy of multicultural girls meeting in dorm rooms.

Maybe he failed to mention that all those girls in his head were card-carrying members of the Audio Visual squad…

The Balenciaga jacket and the J.Crew version actually remind me of prefect (senior students appointed and elected by the rest of the student body and faculty...often a huge popularity contest.) jackets at my alma mater. Never was one, so I never got one.

so cool! Just like Zac Posen had a "Battlestar Galactica" skirt in his Fall 07 collection!

It just goes to show that everyone rips everyone off. What came from a sci-fi show turns into Balenciaga. What comes from Balenciaga turns into J.Crew. What comes from J.Crew turns into Forever 21.

LOL...this jacket reminds me of Captain Kangaroo's famous jacket, except his was red w/ the same piping.

For those of you who don't know how I'm talking about, Captain Kangaroo was a children's show that came on from the 50s-80s who's vibe was like Mister Roger's.....a man who lived in a fantasy world w/ his puppet friends.

So the good old Captain rocked it long before Ghesquier and Homer!

"The Prisoner" series was pretty amazing and stylish. Patrick Mcgoohan was the man...he was the first choice for the original 007 James Bond but turned down the role b/c he didn't want to be a womanizer..."The Prisoner" also popularized the infamous Ball Chair designer by Aarnio Eero.

Fist of all let me say that I love this site and I think I'm seriously addicted. With that aside, I think you guys have posted this j.crew/balenciaga jacket like ten million times and not once with all the comparisons have you referenced that its almost identical (besides the pockets) to victor & rolf's jackets from the SS07 and FW07 seasons.

Any true fashionista would know that isn't piping. Are you serious??????? and maybe a few more question marks for good measure: ?????? It is a binding or a taping depending on how they constructed it, but not piping. Come on!

This has been bothering me for a while now--I thought the Lexington jacket only came in black, gray, and ivory. Where are you getting blue from?
