Breaking: Faran Replaced by Nina Garcia!

Nov 28, 2007 @ 9:02am

nina_garcia.jpgWe're all anxious to get someone on this site who really knows her fashion, and for one post only, we've actually done it:

Next week, Fashionista.com will host its very first guest blogger, Nina Garcia.

The author, stylist, and ELLE Fashion Director will take your fashion questions and answer them with more expertise and probably less giggles than we do, and we're thrilled to have her.

Nina was born in Colombia and raised in Massachusetts, where she went to Boston University and later to fashion programs at FIT and in Paris. She began her career as Marc Jacobs' publicist, when he was still at Perry Ellis. She later switched to the fashion closet at Mirabella magazine, and stayed there until ELLE hired her as their market editor. She's been the ELLE fashion director for seven years, and a Project Runway judge for three.

Earlier this year, Nina wrote The Little Black Book of Style, and later this year, we expect her to hurl some major and amazing fashion spears at some haughty reality TV kids (cough, Christian, cough). But next week, she's all ours.

Leave your questions for Nina as comments below, and she'll answer as many as she can. They can be about her job, about your wardrobe, about her books, about Project Runway, and about ELLE...

Meanwhile, our question for Nina is this:

When you saw Marc's grunge collection for Perry Ellis, did you understand its impact at the time? What was it like to balance its press blessings with the internal fury in the company? And do you still have any of the pieces from that collection? (!)

Sorry. This is really exciting for us...

What are your recommendations for balancing one's personal style with a fairly strict business dress code? Also, what is the best way to transition a casual college student wardrobe into something more sophisticated?

Nina,
My name is Carmen and I met you briefly at the Mall at Millenia in Orlando, Fla. My question is how does one break into the fashion journalism industry without a degree from a big Ivy League school but with a lot of internship experience and even more ambition? Also, as a Hispanic woman, did you ever encounter discrimination or ignorance as you rose to your admirable place in the fashion world? I am Cuban-Salvadoran and I hope to see more Hispanic women like ourselves become fashion icons as you have!

Best,
Carmen Villafane

Guest 10:12AM, could your question be any more dull? Seriously. Why don't you go pick up the latest issue of InStyle and stop boring us.

Please, Nina. Replace Faran forever. I can't believe this site is actually getting some credibility.

What's the best way to get started in the fashion magazine industry? What do magazines look for from intern/assistant applicants?

Thanks!

Nina,

Where did you go to school in Paris? I'm moving there soon and I'm exploring several fashion related options - school being one of them.

Thanks!

Guest 11:34AM,

Your comment on my 10:12 entry was unproductive and rather rude...pardon me for wanting to receive some fashion wisdom!

Nina, in addition to my previous questions, what pieces do you think are essential when traveling with very limited suitcase space for an extended period of time?

I am interested in pursuing some sort of career in fashion. As a high school student I am debating whether to attend fashion school or business school. So, my questions are:

What decisions did you make to get where you are today?
What led you to working in fashion magazines?

Thanks,
Emma

Hi Nina,

Is it possible for someone who is 50 to start a second career in fashion? I am a registered nurse who came out of the womb loving fashion, but didn't follow my dream. I live in Manhattan and would be willing to start at the bottom rung of the professional ladder, if need be.

Thank you for any guidance you can give me.

P.S. I sat next to Steven Meisel in 5th grade. Why didn't I listen to him more!

Ok. So I have had my fair share of semi arguements with Faran, but guys to write such horrible comments about "replacing her" is silly and juvenile. If you don't like this blog, don't read it.

I personally feel that guest bloggers aren't needed. Faran and everyone else on here are very on top of things happening in fashion.

I agree with Rachel. Kudos Faran! You guys run a great site.

Nina:

How would you suggest to get started in the industry?
What experience should you have before applying for an internship at a fashion magazine?

And who's your favorite Project Runway contestant???

thanks
taylor

I also am in highschool and love the questions asked by a guest at 2:40.
and here is one from me

As a 16 year old, I often find it hard to wear most of the styles that women who are 5 or 6 years older then me can wear. I clearly am not going to show up to school in 5 inch heels! What do you suguest I wear to still satisty my fashion needs but at the same time remain age appropriate and practical? thank you

Geez! The peanut gallery sure is harsh today.

I think it's fantastic that the blog has rose to the level of prominence that yields such decorated guest bloggers but hope that doesn't mean the current editors' positions are in any sort of jeopardy.

I have a question but it's more for the haters than Nina Garcia: Why would you read a blog when you harbor such unwarranted venom for the person who runs it?

Nina,

Do you think it is possible to carve out a career in fashion (other than in retail) in a city that is not exactly known as the chicest in the US and that happens to be north of New York and is also where you went to undergrad? Or, does my future require a move to NYC, Paris, or London?

Thanks!

Nina,
I am a sophomore in college majoring in writing. I want a serious job in the fashion industry at some point in my life, it would be nothing short of a dream... but obviously I understand you have to start somewhere. I would give almost anything to score an internship this summer. With no connections to or in the fashion world, how would you recommend trying to break into the industry? Especially in today's world of fashion-saturated media (ie fashion blogs galore), it seems almost impossible to stand out in the throngs of girls wishing to be the next editor of The Best Fashion Mag Ever. Please tell me that it isn't just luck, being in the right place, with the right resume, at the right time.

Thank you!
Dana

If you were leaving your job for a wonderful, hypothetical reason, what are the qualities you would look for when hiring your replacement?

Not sure why you think Nina has more cred than Faran. She(Nina)does nothing for me. I find her so boring and never once have thought, "oh I would kill for that outfit". I would be MUCH more interested to hear what the "street shot" people have to say. Or maybe Kate or Agyness??? Then I might have some questions.

Hi again Nina,

Here's an addendum to my question/comment- (nyc nurse who wants to start a second career in fashion) - I know I have the right stuff for it- just ask Eric in Barneys shoe salon- he knows me. He's actually been the one who has been encouraging me.

thanks again for any guidance you can offer!

Hi Nina,
I'm 26 I.T. professional, who would like to increase my profile in the industry as a business woman. I want to be a walking, breathing brand, money-making machine. I already have the brains but I know looking good will go a long way.
So I need a serious style makeover, can you give advice on what must-have items should I have in my wardrobe. I love classic yet young, mens-wear inspired, trendy pieces, and at this stage my budget is limited :-)
Please give me advice?
Thando (Pretoria, South Africa)

Hi Nina,
I was wondering if you have any tips for breaking into the fashion business. My dream is to become a buyer for a departement store and eventually open my own shop. Im currently a senior in high school and in college i am going to try and get a double major in fashion merchandising and fashion design, with a minor in marketing (if it all fits in my schedul). Do you have any advice for what I should do or what it takes to break into the business?
Thanks so much,
Natalie Coley

Nina,
What types of things did you do in highschool (journalism or a fashion club) to be prepared for a career in fashion?
And, what did you do to get more knowledge about fashion?
thank you so much!

Nina, who are some of your favorite stylists?

What do you think separates the truly great stylists from the rest?

(Sorry. I'm late to the game. But what's new?)
