Do You Know the Shopbop Models?

Nov 19, 2007 @ 2:28pm

milk carton shop bop.jpg

When we first posted about ShopBop, we had no idea there was such an obsession for their models. People know them. People talk about them. We’ve even caught comments - and entire posts on other blogs - about the girls who model Juicy for a living.

They don’t seem to pose for any other catalogs or shopping websites. They all seem to have only one, continuous job: Distracting Shopbop shoppers from the clothes with annoying poses and confused gazes.

And since everyone seems to know who they are (on sight, anyway,) we thought we’d try to match some names to these familiar faces.

So we really want to know a little more about these girls, specifically the red-haired one that everyone loves to hate.

Do any of you out there know them?

I don't think they're as bad as people make them out to be. I check shopbop everyday for whatever new, great stuff they've added, and never have I found myself completely distracted by these girls. They update daily, we can't honestly expect the photos to all be perfect and gorgeous.

I thought I was the only one who thought the models were weird. The redhead especially gets on my nerves. Shopbop is lucky that their clothes are great enought to stand on their own, because the redhead actually makes me angry when I see her modeling something I like.

i agree with bighug.
a lot of times i think her pose or the look on the face turns me off the item she's modeling, which is the opposite of what shopbop wants her to do.

also, i find myself not looking at her when i'm doing a search for a brand or a style, and the search results show up with a page full of the models. it's subconscious, but my eyes glaze over her. kind of like the way her eyes are glazed over and dead in most of the pictures.

I don't know any of these women personally. But I can tell you that I certainly do find them a distraction. A welcome distraction, sometimes, from the fact that I cannot afford most of the goods on that site to begin with.

They have other functions as well: aside from providing a body for the clothing, they daily reaffirm my belief thatskininess does not equal beauty. Extreme thinness is de rigeur in the fashion world, but that doesn't mean that it always looks good (of course, the opposite also applies.) These girls could be the poster children for this assertion. On shopbop.com, it is definitely the rule, and not the exception.

They tend towards a dry, angular thinness, and their legs look painfully tiny, even in comparison to other, more successful, models. These shrunken limbs and the perpetually awkward manners in which they are posed do not make the clothes look any better or more desirable (which is OK, because they are desirable enough as far as I'm concerned!)

And no matter how ridiculous their poses or how lazy their eyes, they keep them on. I have come to accept it, and, If I am to be perfectly honest with myself, if they were to replace these girls with more competent models, I would miss them (or, more specifically, the gales of snarky laughter they inspire). Inculding the redheaded model. ESPECIALLY the redheaded model.

PS: But I genuinely like the round faced, short haired blonde model. Her face reminds me of the simply adorable model in the *shudders* Tommy Hilfiger 2007 campain

http://a1472.g.akamaitech.net/f/1472/124/4h/images.ebags.com/img/logos/lifestyle_10335_729.jpg

Anyone know whom that model is, btw? The *shudders again* Hilfiger model, I mean, not the shopbop blonde.

Rachael, I disagree. Shopbop is owned by Amazon, so yes the photos do have the potential to be gorgeous and perfect with the amount of funding they have. I personally hate Shopbop as their motto is pretty much quantity over quality. Both their photos and merchandise selection need some editing.

There's a store called Bop in downtown Madison that carries the same sort of stuff (and is essentially the only place in town where you can get anything that is remotely in fashion---though I think that there's an H+M in the West Towne Mall now). I never thought about it before, but now that I know shopbop.com is based in Wisconsin, it would make sense that the two are affiliated.

No, it's not. Slim pickings. Marc by Marc, Juicy, etc. All the blah stuff. Sometimes they have interesting shoes, and if you wear jeans then they have a decent selection. One thing, though: they do carry cute cold-weather gear, which is nearly impossible to find. There's a store across the street that carries the softest cashmere sweaters you've ever touched (outside a Loro Piana store, that is).

I actually think the brunette is quite attractive, her own personal 'blue steel' aside--I don't see the scary-skinniness, and I think she makes the clothes looks good. The redhead's expression is just too weird.

They actually compare favourably to some of the models used by other sites, Revolve and Active Endeavours in particular--I just think that some of them are so unattractive that the clothes are done a total injustice. Also, some of the shots are so poorly styled that I feel outraged on the designer's behalf.

Whenever I had my hair cut, my stylist couldn't resist telling me of Redhead's latest woes (see my "issues" comment in the link). Once she told me of Redhead being sent home from the shows in Milan because at 5'10" she was too short. Uh...yeah. There's only one reason models are sent home.

And maybe if she hadn't been so nasty in her receptionist job at my stylist's back in the LATE 1900s, I wouldn't have to hate on her now. Karma and all.

You can use the models for fit/ sizing hints. Assume they are wearing the smallest size. If it is hanging off of them, and it usually is, it runs way big. Serious vanity sizing. But you can also email shopbop about that and they write back right away.

Red looks like she needs an eye transplant because she is exhausted from changing her clothes 7000 times a day.

One more thing: What the heck kind of name is Le Call? And what do you think Owen calls her? He seems like a funny nickname giver. And maybe he can bust out some Hansel moves on shopbop- Owen is fierce!

Le Call is a shopbop model. http://www.shopbop.com/lookbook/lookbook_main.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302074679

I love all the models at shopbop. And yes, they are thin, but models are supposed to be thin. I doubt shopbop would be as successful as they are today if they had clothing on bigger girls. The models are there to show off the clothing. The reason the models don't smile much is because the attention is supposed to be on the clothing, not the model.

I personally love all three of the girls above. I would love to look like any one of them. The red head's name is Elana, the middle girl is Iskra and the model on the right is Lexi.

I think it's a smart move on Shopbop's part. YES, (I find) the girls distracting, but models are unmistakably a huge marketing tool. How many girls have screamed "Gemma!" or "Agyness!" in excitement- over the girl- not the *fashion*. IMO the SB girls are attractive, but have a little of the ANTM mindset ("I'm pretty enough, I can stand still and snap a beautiful shot"). Better than catalogue... but not high fashion.

The Shopbop models have become synonymous with the site. A Shopbop picture posted anywhere else on the web will trigger a DING- SHOPBOP!

Regardless of whether we like the models or not, this post has certainly created a buzz for them. Maybe that's what they wanted in the first place? :)By the way, the milk cartons are brilliant!!!

These models make shopbop who they are and are the reason shopbop is talked about so much the marketing of this company has been done so well and is most likely why the company is such a success. Without their signature models shopbops image would no longer have its identityin which these models have given the site. Whether or not the redhead blonde or brunnette's your favorite it's become the same as asking what's your favorite flavor of ice cream.
