Inside Out

Nov 28, 2007 @ 4:22pm

scary shopbop model.jpgWe've bought a lacy bra or two for strategic layering under sheer tanks. It's a comfortable and sexy look - our go-to going out outfit.

But we never considered wearing our bra OVER a tank or t-shirt - even after this season's lingerie explosion - until we found this VPL set on ShopBop - something that's also appeared in several of our favorite fashion magazines.

The model rocks a Vespa-green "Smoking Bra" over her white t-shirt, (with Helmut Lang shorts that we're also mildly obsessed with), prompting Faran to wonder, "DIY Proenza Schouler?"

There'd have to be rules for this look, like funky, not lacy, bras.

A smaller chest would work best, and the outfit underneath the lingerie should probably be casual.

But with the right ingredients it could definitely draw well-deserved second looks.

Have you seen anyone pulling this off, besides Ali Michael in Teen Vogue? Or is this one "trend" best left to quietly die?

I have actually pulled it off. Don't you remember Prada's charcoal grey felt bra over their grey cashmere sweater from last F/W 06? I have it and it is amazing. The reason why it looks so cool is that it is not overtly sexy, that is the key.

I was looking at this item all day yesterday and then I realized this is definitely one of those things that you can't pull off in real life.

No me gusta.

It could be pulled off if you took the time to create a trompe d'oeil bra in a subdued color on a long-sleeved garment of a similar shade...

But I stick by me original reaction.

Let's call to mind a classic '80s movie...Tom Hanks & Darryl Hannah in "Splash". Tom Hanks had a crazy receptionist at his workplace, who had alledgedly been struck by lightning...perhaps multiple times.

There's a scene where Tom and his brother (John Candy) come to work, and the receptionist is wearing her bra on the outside of her blouse. She says, "Your father's on the pnone". Tom says, "Our father died 7 years ago." And she says, "Shall I take a message?"

I may not have the dialogue exactly right...but you get the point.

maybe if its all gray and all prada and you're a size 4 or below, it could work, but the above look is desperate and tacky, not interesting at all, and not even sexy or cute in the least
beyond that, as a 36 D, I cant even consider going near it !
( imagine the horror of that for 3 seconds ....hilarious!)

That is the most idiotic thing I have ever seen. If I saw that outfit on the street I would verbally assault the wearer, then kick them in the shins for their utter stupidity.

Remember that song "Underwear Goes Inside the Pants"?

I think it could definitely work over a simple spaghetti strapped dress, especially one with an empire waist. (Like Faran said, "DIY Proenza Schouler?")
