How Much Will You Pay for a T-Shirt?

image.jpeg
“Luxury items” may mean bags and shoes to most shoppers, but there’s been a rise lately in the trickiest expense of all:

The prestige t-shirt.

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen claim The Row started when they couldn’t find the perfect one. Now they’ve designed their own, which you can buy at Barneys for about $300.

James Perse has a whole boutique dedicated to expensive tees, with Ella Moss and Vince on its heels. And Burberry, Chloe, and Phillip Lim all have t-shirts in their Spring collections.

Compared to some of those offerings, the latest luxury tee sounds like a bargain. Created by K Street NYC, the shirt is custom-tailored to your bust, waist, and hips. It costs about $60 per shirt, which is way less than most luxury tees, and this one is built specifically for your body.

But is it still too much for a t-shirt? We get ours from the boys’ department at K Mart…

I go through 5-packs of boys Hanes t-shirts like its my job. They are the best. Although I do own a couple splurge t's, Splendid have some really great fitting ones. But generally, unless the shirt is absolutely amazing, I'lll save that $50 for something else.

$300 for a t-shirt is RIDICULOUS. I spent $60 on a Nation LTD tee and while the fabric is nice, it's a little short (even for me, and I'm not even 5'0 and short-waisted). Maybe I just like super long tees. Anyway, it's good to splurge on quality basics but damn gina, spending $300 is just plain stupid.

The only t-shirt I've seen that I think is worth splurging on is this Freddie Mercury reproduction that Fashionista linked to a while back: http://www.wornby.co.uk/Products/Worn-By/Freddie-Mercury-Women-s-T-Shirt-Blue.aspx

I certainly wouldn't pay over $20 for a plain t-shirt. I usually buy whatever's current at Target, since that gets me an up-to-date cut and color palette.

F**K that! American apparel tees fit me best and are significantly less than $60. The more I wash and wear them, the better they look. Go for heathered gray.

Unless it makes me look like a size zero, I'm definitely not paying 300 for a measly t-shirt. However, there's this blouse that's really the bomb, and made me scoop 200 from my pocket for it. It's seen

American Apparel is the most money I'm willing to spend for a T-shirt.

I've seen The Row tshirts and they ARE nice.....but no way would I spend that kinda bread on it. However, they ARE very nice. I give them props for actually making a luxe t shirt.

I use to be skeptical about expensive white Tees and swore by Men's Hanes but a few weeks ago I bought a white Tahari T-shirt on SALE for $45.. my mother thought I was crazy... and it is by far the best T-shirt I have ever owned. The fit, the feel and the look are perfection. Don't knock it till you try it ;)

Agreed, American Apparel will be the most I ever plan to pay for a tee. At least then I know who is making the shirts and where they're coming from. Who knows what sweatshops the others are from.

My favorite plain white Ts are men's undershirts with lycra in them from Wal Mart. The stretch makes it seem not so mannish, and at the price, they're cheap to replace! I just can't bring myself to spend $60 on a T-shirt...

I hate American Apparel Ts. They lose thier shape and get little holes quicker than even a cheapo Hanes t-shirt. I've bought three or four in my lifetime, and that is quite enough.

J. Crew Ts, on the other hand....

I will spend no more than $30 for a t-shirt. For $300 it had better be some finespun gold. Well, I just wouldn't buy it. Frankly, I can't believe people who aren't as wealthy as the Olson twins would waste that kind of money on a t-shirt.

I would never spend more than $25 or $30 on a tee--and rarely even that. J Crew tissue tees are amazing and at the outlet you can get them for about 10 bucks. And I love my gap t-shirts, as well. And seriously, $300 for a t-shirt is absolutely RIDICULOUS!!!
