Those who asked Nina Garcia how to break into the fashion industry might want to hark up:

ELLE needs some fashion interns for next semester. You should be college age or older, ready to do absolutely anything with a quiet smile, and very knowledgeable about fashion, style, and the many attitudes of Keira Knightley. There might be a bit of reporting involved for their website, and you'll definitely get to see the inner workings of stories, fashion shoots, and how to fetch your boss' dry cleaning.

Meanwhile, Marie Claire needs one key intern, right this second, for their fashion closet. There's no writing and no styling involved, but you will be waist-deep in Prada, Marni, Marc, M.A.C, and a path strewn with Balenciaga heels that could lead to a fashion assistant future. College students are best, because Hearst prefers their slaves to get credit for steaming and starching.

Hey Faran,
I'm a Junior in a suburb of NYC (Westchester.) I adore fashion though my real passion is writing. I am an editor of my school newspaper and am planning to be the editor-in-chief next year. I was just curious what you thought would be the best colleges/universities to major in journalism that would lead to a career in magazine journalism (preferably fashion)? Also, do I need to major in journalism in order to land a job at a magazine? Where did you go to college and where did your colleagues go? Does it matter as much as it's stressed in high school? As a Junior with AP's and SAT's -- there is a tremendous amount of pressure to get into the top 15 school -- but my goal is to get an internship at a magazine! Does what college you go to matter in the realm of fashion journalism?

Well, it's far from NYC, but the Journalism School at the University of Missouri-Columbia is frequently ranked as the best j-school in the country, above Northwestern, Columbia, and Yale. It's very competitive, but it's also a bargain considering its contemporaries.

And there's a Mizzou alum work at all the top magazines. It's great for networking. I'm going to NYC in February with the Mag Club to visit mag offices and meet with editors.

This is cool. Fashionista: do you have any ideas for the high school student who wants to do something with fashion in the future? I'd love to intern, but obviously that is definitely for college age+ and I want to be in the business, but not designing (so sewing classes aren't an option)...any other ideas for us youngin' s?
