Erin Fetherston for Target Goes Big

Nov 13, 2007 @ 12:46pm

erin bubble coat.jpg We often get emails from Sample Sale hounds, complaining larger sizes are left out of the mix.

Indeed, if you're lucky enough to scoot into the semi-secret Prada or Chanel blowouts held each season, you'll notice most offerings don't go above a six.

Perhaps in reaction to that frustration, Target and Erin Fetherston are leaking more pieces onto their website early - but only in sizes large and extra large.

Especially exciting is the white bubble coat that's already offered to girls sized 10 - 14, and the bunny-print party dress available in a junior size nine and up - about the equivalent of a grown-up eight.

For those of you who can't yet fit into Erin's cute offerings - and actually, honestly, we can't either - you can still play on Erin's Target page, thanks to her brilliant MTV commercial, which is hosted on the page.

So who exactly are you providing this tidbit for? As a woman who is not a coked-up size 00 I am a bit confused by your purpose and offended by your tone.

I personally have the confidence and life that does not require me to act like a high-schooler on a website and make fun of my fellow woman's dress size to feel good.

But you just did make fun of your fellow woman's dress size - you said if we were small sized, we must be coked up. That's just as uncool as the flack a woman can get for being a bigger size, and I'm confused why you said it.

To answer your question, this post is for anyone who can actually buy the clothes on Target's site right now, and wants to get their cool bubble coat before their friends.

Are you proud of yourself for perpetuating fashion's obsession with those who are "thin"? It is not shameful to be above a size six and proud of it.

Perhaps if you were more secure with yourself, you wouldn't find it necessary to blatantly point out what size you aren't.

Um, then why is the chiffon layer dress only available in a size 1? And did it occur to you that maybe all of the other sizes have already sold out?

And do we even care? Much of it will eventually end up on clearance, just like all the other lines have!

I don't get how this is negative when it seemed like she was just saying that if you were a size 10-14 you could go to the Target site and get first dibs on the coat.

faran isn't saying it's shameful... although i did think it was a little odd that she felt like she had to point out that she can't fit into a size 8 (we've seen pictures! we know)

also, faran, i love the site, but could you please start having writers spellcheck? it's just so distracting to see stuff like 'the royal tennenbaums' pop up in posts...

Adult women I have met in the fashion industry and in real life, if they are a size 00 they are either under 5' or are then due to chemical means.

Faran,

What was the necessity of pointing out what size you aren't? Are you proudly displaying it like a trophy?

It is truly unfortunate that women cannot stop using size as a determinate of another woman's self worth.

You are absolutely right about saying our size - we just wanted to complain that we couldn't buy the Erin bubble coat yet, but it definitely came off a little weird. Sorry!

As to the spell-check thing, well, we're a blog. We try hard, but sometimes things get misspelled. As long as the information isn't wrong, I'm fine with it.

Everytime there is something that has anything remotely to do with weight Faran gets it bad. I just think that she was saying that if you are a size large or extra-large you can go to target.com and get your Erin Fetherston fix. I am in that size category and was offended in the least by the post...sorry, but people have to stop seeing size related posts as a reason to complain, unless of course something offensive was said, which is not true in this case.

I don't see how anything in this post can be interpreted as offensive...if it was my size Faran was talking about, no matter how big or small I was, I'd be insanely happy for the tip! I think people being offended has more to do with their own feelings and insecurities than with anything that is being written here.

well, i'm a 10 and while i'm not offended, i do think this sentence was completely unnecessary:
"For those of you who can't yet fit into Erin's cute offerings - and actually, honestly, we can't either"

oh hey congrats! but you've got big breasts, faran, so i find it hard to believe that you squeeze into sizes that are much smaller.

P.S. How do you create an account??? Am I just blind...

I thought that the target go international lines came in juniors (ie. odd numbered sizes)? When they get to larger sizes do they switch to the women's even number system? Isn't a women's 10 significantly larger than a size 9?

Also on a related size/designer collaboration note, I went to a kohl's yesterday hoping to grab something from vera wang's line. And while the shelves appeared fully stocked there was nothing below a size 6 (a few 6's and 8's here and there but mostly 12's and 14's). If all the smaller sizes are already sold out maybe the chain should rethink how they stock and size her line (putting it with their juniors stuff as Target does instead of next to the section my mom gets her mock turtle necks in?)

There IS something wrong with this post, I think.

I understand that there is nothing wrong with saying "if you are this larger size, you can go buy your Target stuff now"...

HOWEVER, saying "actually we can't fit into these sizes" was unnessary. We know you're skinny, Faran/Fashionistas...no need to point it out. It added nothing of value to the post at all, besides the fact that it let the Fashionistas brag about their size in a very strange sort of way.

y'all are bitches when it comes to size. Remember when you did that vanity sizing investigation and you were horrified that you MIGHT be a 6 or an 8 in some brands? We know you work in fashion and you're skinny, so get over yourselves and stop trying to shame girls who might be-gasp-NORMAL sized.

When I read the title of this entry, I thought perhaps one of the Go Target collections was being made in plus sizes (ala SJP's Bitten which she proudly said was available to a broader range of the American public).

Statistically speaking, Target's going "big" as dubbed by Faran, is actually just going "average," in that the average size for American women is somewhere around a 12. Maybe I'm guilty of living in a borderline-Midwest, unfashionable city, but I don't interpret "average" as remarkably "big."

On top of the above, the self-congratulatory size comment was unnecessarily tacky. I usually find myself defending Faran in my head when the peanut gallery complains. But I'm with the peanut gallery on this issue.

To echo one of the other posters, please start spell checking. One tip might be to begin using a web browser with a spell check function built into it. Mozilla's Firefox, for example checks my spelling while I post.

Hello, I really like the website. I love that they let bigger sizes go live first, it's just neat to feel included in something special and fashion-y.

But my heart broke a little when I read that last sentence, "For those of you who can't yet fit into Erin's cute offerings - and actually, honestly, we can't either". I thought it was insensitive. It's hurtful to read something that sounds like gloating, especially in a post that starts off so cool.

When I read the post I was just excited that I could get my coat. I'm not a smaller size and I didn't find it offensive...a little braggish, but its really not that hardcore of crime.

Definitely agree with whomever said her comment about what size she's not was insensitive. But she apologized so it's all good. I think it just speaks to her involvement in the fashion industry, where the thinner you are, the better. Also, to be quite honest, Faran is not even skinny in my eyes so it makes me wonder.

Forget size, let's look at how the harsh reality of how many of us are obese even at a size 8!! That's scary.

I was not offended by Faran's post.

I'm a size 8-10 and I look just as fucking great as when I was a 4 or a 12. Yes I have been all those sizes. And a size 00 girl doesn't scare me or bother me or her complaining that she can't fit into a L. Move on. You're reaching.

i know that faran apologized but i do have to chime in. this post left me feeling very uneasy. it did have a very biting tone to it and seemed to point out that the fashionistas by no means are a large or "big." and it made it seem like wow, look at that it's the big girls turns at fashion...very very patronizing.

Thanks for apologizing, Faran. The post rubbed me the wrong way too. At 5'10", most people call me skinny, and I wear a size 12 or 14 pants because of my wider hips. I'm sick of feeling like a freak because of this. At the Lucky store near me, the only jeans that fit me are the largest sizes they have. I always feel awful when I leave that store. How sad would it be for a woman who is a little bit larger than me to go in there and not be able to find a single pair that fits? It's demoralizing. Designers and stores that sell clothes only to the smallest among us are a-holes. What a waste to sell a wide-leg pair of black pants in only 0,2 and 4 (I'm looking at you, ShopBop).

instead of bickering over faran's (legitimate) insensitivity, we should be questioning why anyone over the age of 14 should be wearing erin fetherston's aggressively "cute" designs.
