Mother Knows Best

zero gloves.jpgSometimes when we see certain pieces of clothing, no matter how much we like them, all we can think about is how much our mom would hate them.

When we crush on white coats we hear, “It’s going to get dirty!”

When we eye dresses and skirts with distressed hems, “You don’t want to buy a dress that looks like it got ripped!” comes to mind.

The more expensive the item in question, the more the pragmatic mom critique
rings true.

So although we kind of love these cotton
and cashmere elbow-length fingerless gloves from Zero Maria Cornejo
, we can’t push thoughts of “How are those going to keep your hands warm?” and “Why would you pay $163 for gloves that have holes in the fingers and wouldn’t even keep you warm?” out of our head.

We know she’s right. But do you ever get to throw caution (and warmth) to the winds when it comes to winter fashion?

They're to show off your manicure, of course!

ugh shit like that happens to me all the time. whenever I want to spend an absurd amount of money on a single item I hear "you should save it!" or "think of how much you could buy with that!"

never thought about the manicure thing but i bought pair of grey ones in cashmere by phillip lim, and they are very functional for using cell phone or blackberry while you are outside in the cold, or turning pages while reading in the cold. the hands stay warm, and you can use your finger tips.

My friend has an iPhone & it only responds to human touch! It won't dial a single phone call with gloved fingers. So maybe she's responding to this!

I wish I had these for my office. Just enough finger exposed to let you type.

It goes with the trend of demi-sleeved winter coats and toeless boots and leggings in the place of tights! Next up: winter capri pants....

I'll admit it -- I first bought fingerless gloves for smoking. But it turns out they're also amazing for using your phone, getting your credit card out of your wallet, and driving. And my fingers were rarely cold... after all, that's what pockets are for!

i love fingerless gloves and i've almost always just cut the fingers out myself, for the same reasons the commenter above mentions. they're very functional. (and my mom encourages me to buy any and nearly everything)

I started wearing fingerless gloves years ago when I still played guitar. I think they're great but $163 for a pair is too much for me.

I have a pair of gloves very similar to this by Qi Cashmere. Compared to the Zero Maria Cornejo gloves, they are less $$, slightly lighter in color, and they have a mitten part that buttons to the back of the hand to expose the fingerless gloves. A little different, but still very soft and definitely different.

I never realised it before but you're right, I always think about what my mum would say, I'm not sure if it would stop me buying or change my mind but it would definitley make me think. In this case, I do think the gloves are too much $$ for what they are but that wouldnt stop me finding something similar. I'd go to an online hosiery retailer like Tights Please and buy a pair of leg warmers. This way I get leg warmers and gloves in one for less then $10!! Bargain!
