Don’t Look At Me

snow white mirror.jpgWe all have our nervous tics- some people constantly glance down to check their cleavage, some people bite their nails. And these people are never alone.

How do I know this? Because the ultra-skinny actress in today’s blind item, can count me as someone who understands her insanity (though I realize my own paranoia is not nearly as justifiable.)

I’ll let you all in on a signature tic of my own: whenever I am in front of a mirror, especially in a dressing room, I have to check it for two-sidedness [put your face right up to the mirror and cup your hands around your eyes to block out the light- or, if possible, just turn off the lights.

When your eyes adjust, you’ll either see a room full of people laughing hysterically with a camera in hand, or you’ll just see your own eyes, in which case the mirror is really just a mirror.

I have no idea why I always have to do this- it’s probably my nightmare of people playing a clip of me performing my checklist of tests for say, jeans and short dresses. I think I fell asleep to a 10 o’clock news item about this many years ago, and still cannot extract the fear of it from my mind.

Does anyone else obsess over the possibility that someone may be videotaping your shopping trials and selling it on some random site? Or am I the only one?

I'm irrationally paranoid about cameras in the gym locker room; not so much that I'll be caught in a state of undress so much as flexing pathetically in the full-length mirror.

that is not irrational at all. some dressing rooms even have a sign posted that they are viewed on camera by female personnel........everything is filmed these days. you almost need to wear a bodysuit to try on things in a dressing room.........

I do that as well! I think it started once I saw a Law & Order episode from c. 1995 (during the Benjamin Bratt reign) when something terrifyingly similar occurred in a ladies fitting room.
Oh and 'guest': how chilling is that? I always see those signs in Bergdorf's and Neiman's and they never fail to conjure major midday angst.

The real question is have you ever found the mirror to actually be two-sided?

I'm just as paranoid- but if you put your thumb nail up to the glass. If there is a space between your nail and your nail reflection, it's a mirror. If the two nails touch, it's a reflective window.

Tada! no more cupping!

Wow, that's one more thing to add to my obsessive check list. My personal tick...when I leave the bathroom, I glide my hand across my backside to be sure I don't have toilet paper hanging from the back of my pants.

I do this, because it's happened to me. Twice. Oh, this honesty hurts!

And from V..."Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not watching you."

Guest 4:47 is correct - the finger nail trick works. Most dressing rooms do NOT have one way mirrors (they make everyone look the wrong color), but the mirrors on the floor in most department stores (especially mirrors on posts/columns in the middle of the floor) ARE two way with security cameras behind them.

Another test: put a pencil or a key against the mirror. If it touches its reflection, it's a real mirror. If there's space between the points...

also... just to allay your fears a little, I worked in retail a few years ago at a big chain store, and they made it very clear that its illegal in New York State to have any cameras in dressing rooms, period. Even in the halls near the doors. MAJOR fines. Go shopping in Jersey at your peril.

I don't remember who said it, but "perfect paranoia is perfect awareness".

Guest 8:58, I think you mean if they don't touch it is a regular mirror. Unless, somehow, my bedroom mirror is a two way mirror.
