Me Talk Pretty One Day

Doutzen Kroes 2.jpgDoutzen Kroes doesn’t just model for fashion, she also models for public service announcements.

Starting next week, she will appear in a series of ad campaigns from her home county of Tytsjerksteradiel in the Dutch province of Friesland, encouraging other Frisians like herself to “Praat Mar Frysk!”— As in, “Just Speak Frisian,” not Dutch. If the campaign is successful, it might mean emerging Frisian models won’t be able to gossip as fluently with Dutch girls like Lara Stone backstage.

The campaign doesn’t launch until next week, but we know that it will include inflatable mouths- Doutzen is planning on taking them around the world to have her photo taken with them.

Will we see them in the Tents during Fashion Week?

Also: We think this video might be about the campaign, but we don’t speak Frisian so we can’t tell…

Yes, the video is about the campaign. I speak Dutch, not Frisian, but I can understand it a little bit. She says 'Just speak Frisian, because we're worth it'. And she says that she talks Frisian all the time, and uses it in emails, textmessages and msn. She isn't ashamed of her accent, she used to be, but now she doesn't care anymore what other (Dutch) people think and is proud of Frisian. Do you really call it Frisian btw? Sounds so stupid...

It's strange. If you read this after a really strong martini...it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. And I read it twice-ish.

I also speak dutch and I could understand what she was talking about to a certain extend. When I read the comment before mine I had to laugh so hard, because indeed, Frisian does sound kinda so stupid.

I do love the David Sedaris shout-out. Fashionista, you're so culturally aware!

I mean. I guess, yeah, why not opt to lend your voice to a service announcement about speaking frisian instead of, oh I don't know, AID's awareness?

What a frisky topic...

The thirty-minute documentary linked from the Eurolang site is pretty cool. I speak German (and some Norwegian), and the subtitles made it relatively easy to understand. Though I got the big picture, the nuances obviously went over my head. Frysk sounded very nice to my ears; but that just might be because Doutzen comes across as a mild-mannered sweetie.
