Last night’s premier of Project Runway did not disappoint- but our Project Runway Fantasy teams certainly did.
Points:
Natalie: 4; Faran: -3
Current spot:
Natalie: 869th; Faran: 2322 (out of 2,793)
What happened: Elisa screwed us over with a cracked-out creation that belied the roster of credentials boasted on her Bravo TV bio.
Kevin turned out to be a wash for Natalie, and Simone dragged Faran down with a poorly-fitting, half-finished frock that made Nina Garcia fume, “Why is this dress so poorly constructed?”
Our only saving grace was Rami’s elegant but aren’t-you-sold-at-Intermix winner that’s keeping both of us afloat.
Immediate plans for next week: Drop Elisa (seriously, what designer takes a nap when her dress looks like arts and crafts vomit?), add Ricky for inevitable crying points, and keep Rami.
Bones to Pick:
*Jillian, the illustrator from Ralph Lauren, made one of the most beautiful dresses of the night – we were shocked her deep-red cocktail bubble didn’t make it to the top three.
*Carmen may be an “ex model,” but her outfit was heinous! How did she escape a comment from Michael Kors like “This reminds me of a terrorist Christmas tree explosion?”
*Christian was only in the Top Three for good TV. His jacket had lovely seams, and I could definitely get behind that black-edged skirt, but the frills on the front of his blouse looked like skinned dalmatian ears.
*We still can’t get over how boring Rami’s dress was. Doo.Ri must have been watching Project Runway like, “Didn’t I do that four years ago?”
That said, costume designer Chris was actually very sweet and cool, and we’re going to start rooting for him. But our new favorite, favorite, favorite is calm and adorable Steven.

Ha! I had -7 and was in 2592nd place. Damn you, Simone!
Everyone can rag on Elisa, but Kirna Zabete and many other respected stores sold her dresses for many seasons, especially in the late nineties.
She was edited to look like last season’s Angela, which really annoyed me.
Elisa was a pioneer for hand sewn, artsy garments, before Imitation of Christ M.R.S. by Molly Stern. That is her style. She is very succesful with it. If you want a dress by her, she has you lay down and she sews around you. It is an experience in itself.
She has dressed many a celebrity and singer, clients some of the others who commented negatively about her on the show last night would die to have themselves. She would never brag about stuff like that.
Her Hunger World shows always included her friends of all shapes and sizes.
So to see negative comments about her on several blogs this morning made me realize how underground she still is. But that is fine, as she IS all about the art.
Rachel
Eeeh, not quite. Rachel, I appreciate your defense of Elisa, and she’s definitely a very cool woman with great technical skill. But I’ve seen many of her garments in person, and to quote a phrase from last season, “her taste level is suspect.” It’s not aesthetically great, usually, and just because a pop star decided to wear one of her outfits doesn’t mean it makes sense – as Christina Aguilera at any VMA show could tell you.
Rachel/guest:
Absolutely agreed… Elisa is a tremendous talent that I’ve has the joy of working with before. Her work is very organic and avant garde, and has been acclaimed by a number of sources, including Vogue, Surface, French Vogue, and the Ecco Damani award committee.
Elisa was poised to become one of the big underground names in fashion, but unfortunately, had a terrible accident a few years ago that took her out of commission for a long while, and made her re-evaluate the important things in life, like her family, personal happiness, and her child.
I was shocked at how they were trying to paint her as “crazy” and “unstable”… she is easily one of the nicest and most patient people in fashion that I’ve ever met or known. Her talent is unstoppable– the one point that I do concede is that she should have edited the train on the dress at the end, as she should have taken her newbie model’s inexperience with her work into consideration.
That said, I hope that Elisa revs it into high gear and kicks ass in the competition!
So loving that PR is back on!!
ditto on the doo.ri. i’m surprised no one (but christian, and even he, obliquely) called him out on it.
Elisa is great and she definitely has a style developed, that being said, she’ll probably get eliminated fairly soon because her style doesn’t really jive with the rest of the competition and she will jsut continue to make one seam dresses with cut-outs and essential oils and the judges will tell her “You’re very talented and have a very unique style but we don’t think you are right for this competition” or something like that. Actually, I was surprised to see her there in the first place.
Hi Faran. I think that if you are specifically referring to that stretch velvet dress that Christina wore to the vms with the white afro wig, that was actually by Mara Hoffman.
What I mean by her client list is that her competitors on the show would die for it (though I see they have many established designers on the show this season.)
She is a breathe of fresh air, such a lovely, real and compassionate person. So I was horrified that Tim Gunn would act that way towards her work, especially when she was doing the grass staining of the fabric in the first twenty minutes. I can certainly understand the train, though, it was too much.
I remember when Hussein Chalayan was first in the fashion news in around 1994/1995 and he would bury his clothes for that same effect. Thinking outside of the box should be celebrated.
Astral girl, what happened to Elisa? I remember about Susan Cianciolo and the brutal attack on her in prospect park awhile ago, but never heard about what happened to Elisa…..
Rachel
Team Red Lobster: 6 points for Rami
Tim Gunn was just being Tim Gunn…his tastes, tho incredibly good on many levels, is extremely conventional. This was the man who thought Michael’s hot pants were de trop…and of course, they won.
I was intrigued by Eliza (using grass to dye a fabric is NOT something you see everyday, but it IS an approach and has a PoV) and even Christian, but I know that this isn’t the venue for these sorts of designers…..their approaches are very high concept. I was incredibly amused about Tim’s comments on the print matching up on Christian’s jacket. That said it all.
I’m still furious nobody mentioned the trim on Christian’s jacket. As far as I’m concerned, that ruined the entire thing for me – otherwise I would have really liked it.
As for you Rachel, I was referencing Christina Aguilera because she makes terrible fashion choices despite her vast resources. Much like Elisa, whose clothing, while intriguing on an arts and crafts level, is not up to par with what’s working in fashion.
Well, we will have to agree to disagree.
But this is indisputable:
Heidi Klum is an idiot for saying that “It looked like she was pooing her dress…”
thank you for saying something faran! all i wanted to do was rip that trim off the jacket!
I would have LOVED that jacket if it weren’t for the trim.
I dispute…Heidi’s comment was “…pooing fabric,” and that really was the highlight of the show. As for the contestants…I was ready to hate Christian, but now I think he might be pretty entertaining. Rami may burn brightly and fizzle out, but I think Chris & Victorya could quietly produce consistently good designs for awhile.
