Fashion Is Fun

Serena’s Costume Drama: Bad Behavior, Cheap Clothes

serena forever.jpgWe adored Wednesday’s Gossip Girl, especially the part we feared would suck:

The flashbacks to Thanksgiving ‘06, where Nate was actually fun and cool, Blair was sick but happier, and Serena Van Der Woodsen was a serious problem child.

In the course of one episode, we saw her undress in front of her best friend’s boyfriend. Get drunk. Get high. Get caught by her mom. And maybe the best part, get almost run over by a car, while craving apple pie. Of course, Dan saved her at the last second from getting squished by a Saab, and this is a good time for us to remind you girls in high school, college, and anywhere with single men that Dan does not exist.

Besides noticing our lack of Dan Humphrey, we also saw this:

That whenever Serena’s doing something naughty, she’s wearing really cheap clothes.

Hosing down Nate in Blair’s bathtub? She was wearing Juicy sweats. Passed out from vodka on Blair’s sofa? She looked like an L.L. Bean ad. And perhaps the biggest grievance of all - when Serena was drunk and roaming the streets of Brooklyn, she sported a massive leopard coat from Forever 21!

Are Gossip Girl’s costume designers trying to increase Serena’s personal and moral value by upping her clothing allowance?

Totally, and that’s actually a really cool way to enhance the story. But there’s one thing we can’t forgive:

That leopard coat and Blair Waldorf’s dotted gray dress from Marc Jacobs? Those are in stores now. So how could our two favorite heroines have them a whole year early?!

Oh well. Maybe Eleanor Waldorf is the vice president of the CFDA…

I could be wrong, and I could be focusing too much on what I can and cannot afford, but the use of the word cheap in this entry is a bit off-putting. Juicy Couture is not cheap, nor is L.L. Bean. As much as Forever 21 sucks (sorry couldn't think of a better word) because of their copyright infringement issues, it's refreshing to see Payless and F21 on "wealthy" TV characters. Maybe present-day, good girl Serena can rock these pieces too (well maybe not that ugly coat.)

theory: maybe they're putting her in today's F21 and Payless because this year's trickled-down fast fashion was last year's magazine-fresh must-have? and maybe it's easier to buy a knockoff than to get into designer archives?

Uh. I agree with the above comment - I don't think anyone who forks over $200 for a velour track suit can qualify as "cheap." Tacky as all hell, yes, but NOT cheap.

Personally, I think that coat is hideous, and if it WASN'T from F21, I'd call you an idiot for spending so much money on it.

That coat was so hideous. But seeing Blair in her 07 Thanksgiving mbmj dress made me want it even though it would not flatter my figure at all.

Well if you guys don't agree with cheap... in price... I would hope you would agree that they are cheap in quality... That's my true meaning of cheap anyway.

It is possible to spend a ton of money on a wardrobe and still look cheap. Case in point - Posh Spice.

Blair was too cute in her MBMJ frock! I specifically watch the show for her character, but I like your theory about Serena's former bad self dressed in bad clothes. Hmmm...

Ha my exact words while watching the episode:
"God this is SO unrealistic! This can't be a flashback because those clothes are from THIS season!"

My less gossip girl and fashion-enthused friend severly made fun of me for the comment.

Ugh, whatever the reason, that outfit was disrespectful to non-blind people everywhere.

This is a show that is based on a series of books for teens. Their target audience for the show appeals to girls that read their books as well. Those girls can't spend $1000 on an item of clothing since they are in high school. Maybe GG wants to feature clothes that girls can actually afford? I think that is especially true since they have an online shopping section on the official GG page (on the CW website).

I dunno, the way they're forming Serena's character is as the trust fund child from the upper east side who honestly doesn't care for her lifestyle. I see her as either buying the coat from a cheap store, just to piss her mother off, or genuinely liking the coat (although i don't know why) and buying it because she liked the coat and didn't care where it came from.

I totally can't pull off full on leopard jacket but at this weeks D&G store party 3 "it" girls rocked it hard. are the GC stylists the new OC trendsetters?
