The Smallest One Was Madeline

madeline's rescue.jpg
Generally speaking, we tend to approve of things that look like Madeline, our favorite little French school girl and children’s book heroine.

And this amazing pleated wool “Eleonore” jumper from Fremont, that we discovered while browsing the website of Brooklyn boutique Ylli, definitely fits the bill.

But with jumpers, pleated skirts, and knee socks quickly joining the list of any cool New York girl’s wardrobe essentials, we have to ask:

When are you too old to rock the “little girl chic” look?

And will people take you seriously if you look like a schoolgirl, even one created by the chic Austrian artist Ludwig Bemelman?

I'm always so jealous of girls that can pull these looks off. I already look like I'm 12, so I can't wear any cutesy stuff like, lest someone actually call the cops because there's a little girl at a bar or something. sigh.
The knee socks I love though.

i've said it before, i'll say it again...it's all about styling...like with any look, just don't go overboard and wear it all at once. dress it up with some chic "older" looking pieces to balance it out a little bit...

really cute on the mannequin but the criss-cross straps would probably not work out so well for anyone with a larger bust.
also: i was looking for madeline video clips pretty recently! unfortunately, i could only find the intro - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sj2XOhC1YlM
i've found whole episodes of david the gnome and captain planet but no madeline :-(

I'd love to have a skirt like that, but I am jumper-averse. Always reminds me of the Delicious Dish girls on SNL.

as for age, if you carefully rock it (slightly longer than mini skirts, for example) I think it can go on indefinitely.

No way am I going to wear that. I'm 5'2", fine boned and a young looking 28 year old. I need to look like a grown-up to survive. Sorry, fashion industry, but you're just going to have to make things that make all women look cool and stylish. Even us supposed grown-up "kids."

I don't know why all you young looking older people complain about looking "too young", don't you like it? i mean you don't need botox or need to get stuff fixed for a long while. I mean my mum was a really young looking mum, and she still is and it's really nice. everyone thinks she's my sister.
Sticking to the topic, i really feel the weight of my years and i'm scared teenagers will make fun of me if i try the little girl look. but I do really love the look, like in the erin featherstone dollhouse movie, i wouldn't mind being stuck there looking young and pretty forever with no life.

I think that once a person looses their babyface then it is time to avoid the "little girl" trend. I have seen people who should not be doing this "look" and resemble a character out of the Betty Davis film "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane".
