TopShop ETA: 10 More Months

topshop.jpgSo when is TopShop coming to America? September!

According to WWD, the location is confirmed as 478 Broadway in Soho (right by us!). If the mega-space does well, there will be two more Manhattan stores probably within a year. And if those do well, TopShop will roll out in other American cities- think San Francisco, Atlanta.

For Americans, the worst thing about TopShop has always been one of its selling points, that if you want to shop there in person, you have to go overseas. We always thought this lent the brand a certain exclusivity- we all know when something is hard to get it only makes us want it more.

While we like the idea of TopShop opening near people who would never otherwise see it, we still feel like this might be a Catch 22. We’ve all been complaining for years that TopShop should open stateside, but will we still be head over heels when it shares the same sidewalk as Zara and H&M?

I'm still concerned about the price. I have a feeling it's going to be more expensive than we think.

Laia, I think you're right. Sir Philip Green, TopShop's owner, said in the article that they're not planning on altering the prices substantially for the US market. Which I can only take to mean that a £100 dress will cost around $200.

These companies are similar in size and market, right? Then their close proximity should beget a continuously positive and competitive product. Guess we'll wait and see.

it's true: now that there's confirmed news Topshop WILL be here (finally!).. the allure is a lot less shiny.

Eh no one is going to want to pay their prices doubled if they aren't going to curve their prices to the US market. Topshop is nice, I enjoyed it while I lived in London, but I don't think it's worth the hype.

The real questions will be in brand worth. Do I think Topshop is awesome enough to pay 200 bucks for a dress? Or would I rather hold on to the 200 bucks and save a little extra and buy something at the Phillip Lim store?

last year, when i finally got curious enough about topshop to check it out, i went on their website and for the hell of it looked up their locations. i knew it was overseas but had heard talk about them moving here sometime soon. they have had a manhattan address on their website since last year! when my boyfriend and i went looking for it, we were very disappointed to have spend an hour combing every inch of soho looking for it. shame on them.

Actually, the prices sound like they'll be much the same since the GBP is worth 2x as much as the US $.

JMHO, but TopShop will do very well here...at least in NYC, if nothing for the British cool cache and the association w/ Kate Moss.

I remember when H+M wasn't in the US... Their aura of cool evaporated very soon after they touched our shores, after the requisite fawning and hype. It just isn't as much fun when everyone else knows where you got that cute dress and that you paid $19.99 for it during the post-Christmas sale. Granted, H+M stores in France and Germany have different stock, etc. But now you don't have to have gone on holiday in Europe to acquire their products; it is no longer caché, and the status that went along with that quality is gone.

The bottom line: it will be sad to see the same thing happen to TopShop.

well, i live across the street from topshop (i know, im lucky;), not in england tho, and i can never get bored of their stuff. its the most inovative company with normal prices there is. and no, h&m and zara cant compare - h&m is either mumsy or very teenage and zara is defo way more serious lady at work then topshop. so, u wont get bored, trust me. i go to zara, cant find anything that is not overpriced and cool then head to topshop and get madly in love with EVRYTHING in the store. there is only one love for me - its topshop!

Won't be surprised if the prices are jacked up. The Kate Moss line sure is, at least in Canada. I have a pair of jeans that cost me like $140 Canadian. Price in the UK? 50 pounds or $100 Canadian. What's with the $40 diff?

BTW, there is a TopShop boutique at Opening Ceremony in NYC, if anyone's interested in checking out whether it's worth it and what's there w/o a trip to London.

As Jacqueminette said best....the whole point of TopShop for some was not about the clothes, but frankly showing off that you've been to Europe. For them, yes the fashion cache is over. Leave it to the rubes, eh? LOL

Just wanted to say that I bought a top at Topshop and I saw it at Forever 21 for half the price after I got back from the UK. It was exactly the same top but with a different tag on it. *Sigh*
