What Lies Beneath

80 20 wedges.JPGRecently, we stood in a shoe store staring at the newest boots from NYC footwear label 80%20, the same footwear label that makes our favorite skimmers. We approved of the navy blue color. We liked the fringe.

Essentially, these were cute boots. But there was still something a little bit odd about these “Tammy Fringe Boots” that we couldn’t quite put our finger on.

Closer inspection revealed the truth. A hidden wedge!

The seemingly flat boots were, in fact, wedge boots masquerading as flats. The regular looking heels concealed a two-inch wedge, creating the same hidden lift effect sported by the likes of Bono and Tom Cruise.

Because we were in the market for flat boots, we decided to pass these guys up.

But we’d still like to explore the psychology of the hidden wedge:

Are hidden wedges shameful? Do people need to pretend to wear flats? It’s one thing to sport a Chloe wedge, its height right out in the open for all to see. But we feel like hidden wedges, which are essentially lifts, is a little too George Costanza to be cool.

Also, does anyone else think that hidden wedges make feet look a little like horse hooves?

So I can look casual without looking stumpy? I think this is the greatest idea in the history of great ideas! (I have kind of a height complex).

i'm not crazy about those booties but i've never gotten over a pair of maison martin margiela hidden wedge cowboy boots i saw a friend wearing...she paid big bucks for them, even on sale, and they were INCREDIBLE. and there is nothing shameful about incredible shoes.

as a short boy, i need to find out more about these Bono/Tom Cruise shoes you speak of. while both men kind of repulse me, my 5'6'' height could use a lift. --B

i work at bird in brooklyn and we have repeatedly sold out of all styles by 80/20. while they dont appeal to me; just a little too space hooker/dallas cowboy cheerleader-y, the groups of women demanding to know when we will get more in must like them for some reason.

2 or 3 years ago when flat vintage & cowboy boots were all the rage i bought an adorable pair... that were wayyy too small.

I took them to the shoe people and urged them, despite their resistance, to create black rubber lifts. it worked!

not only were the lifts moving my foot up to a place to fit in the tiny boots, but it gave me an extra 2" height! remember: vintage boots tend to be very roomy in the ankle area which allows for this 'hack'.

oh and i wanted to add from my previous comment: NO ONE can tell i'm wearing lifts! they don't look like clunky horsehooves like these 80/20's...

btw, There's similar hidden wedge boots in SACCO stores too...

You know, those hidden wedge boots in Sacco are 80%20, too. :) Sacco has the pebble leather ones, but there are other versions 80%20 makes.
