Would You Wear

Would You Wear Sneakers? When?

153534_nvy_g.jpgIn high school, I wore red suede Vans with everything. My vintage men’s jeans from Farrah. My black cocktail dress from Banana Republic. My blue Betsey Johnson slip for prom. Secretly, I think Lily Allen stole my style - or at least all the girls like me, trying to straddle grunge and glam, and still make it to class on time.

It’s been ten years since my first pair of Vans, but I still have a sneaker weakness. I like white Converse with jeans. I like Nanette Lepore skimmers with mini dresses. And I still have a pair of red Vans, a birthday present from a boy. They have Elvis Costello lyrics written on the soles, and I wear them on weekends with wide-leg slacks.

I love them, but sometimes I wonder -

When does a woman stop wearing sneakers? Is there ever an age limit? A prohibitive space?

Last year, Voguette Lauren Davis told me, “My mother always said that the only people who run are children and thieves. So why would you ever need sneakers?”

Stacy London from What Not To Wear agreed - okay for the gym, probably not for most women over 20.

Meanwhile, I’m contemplating my next rubber soles - a colored pair from Converse to support The Global Fund.

Are you craving a new pair, too? Or is it time for boots, flats, and conceding the idea that grown-ups don’t wear sneakers unless they’re playing pro ball?

I'm with London. To me, sneakers are for boys, men, teenagers and girls.... and for women when they work out or at most, run errands. But I would argue they are ok until 25 instead of 20... My only exception being 5.10 and up models who look good in anything. Us over 25 mere mortals on the other hand just end up looking frumpy... imo.

that's rubbish. clearly lauren davis & stacy london never walk for long periods of time. no heels (even the one's that are supposedly super comfortable) will ever be as comfy as a good pair of sneakers.

yes sometimes i like flats but if i know i'm going to be walking around nyc for a bit i always wear my sneakers - whether they're fashionable or not. i'd much rather be comfy than fashionable any day.

sadly, i think i agree with stacy and lauren. i love sneakers but whenever i put on even the cutest most 'mature' pair, i feel like i'm reverting back to high school. something about sneakers screams "i refuse to grow up"... but no one is 'grown up' 100% of the time so exceptions are ok.

No sneakers over 20? I'm a junior in college and I just turned 21...I guess according to Stacey, that makes me too old to wear my Cons!

You can have my converse when you pry them from my cold, dead feet. I intend to wear them until they stop looking cute on me, may that never happen.

I wouldn't wear gym shoes around, though. My Saucony running shoes are for the gym only.

uh oh, i just turned twenty, and there is no way i'm giving up my sneakers (usually converse). Being 5'10" i refuse to wear heals as i would be a giant and having size 11 feet it is just way easier to find sneakers in my size (usually because they're unisex). Whenever i do find a really nice pair of flats/boots in my size i buy them, but its a pretty rare occurance.

In my early twenties I was all chucks. I still have my collection, and I still love them. But I stopped wearing them and moved onto boots because I look really young to the point where it's so annoying because people think I'm a teenager, and I'm in my mid-twenties with a career.

Anyways, omg, Faran, the red shoes Elvis Costello part made me almost cry it was so good. Wow, I'm in love.... =)

I'm 24 and wearing my Converse right now. I will NEVER give them up. This is by far one of the more ridiculous fashion rules I've heard. Lame!

That's ridiculous. I'm all about looking fashionably appropriate, but, especially if you live in the city and you need to walk 10 blocks to get to the grocery store, or you need to get to class, etc, no flat shoe is going to cut it but sneakers. And there are so many stylish sneakers made now that everyone can find something. My mother is 50 and has cute sneakers for errands, and they look age appropriate. It's just a matter of finding the right kind of sneaker.

There's just no excuse to beat your feet into a pulp anymore. I love my heels, flats, and boots, but come on.

That's so dumb! 90% of people walk weirdly and a good pair of sneakers provides the correct support for somebody.

When heed-devotees are hobbling hags, they'll regret it. Sneakers 4-eva!!! Without my sneakers, I walk crooked.

12:27--Oh, honey, no. I'm 5'10" and a size 10 shoe (sometimes an 11 or 12 in Euro sizing) and I wear 3+ heels all the time. We're taller than everyone else to begin with; might as well rock those those long legs God gave you. Also, in regards to sizes, Zappos is your friend.

I'm 21 and since I started working full time I don't find that I wear sneakers at all during the day--for those of us not lucky enough to be blogging for a living, sneakers aren't generally work-appropriate. But at concerts, bars, weekends, it's the black Converse low-tops that I've had since high school, and I'm never giving them up.

I am a sneaker addict, and consider them a key facet of my wardrobe. Converse, Adidas Gazelles, old-school Sauconys-- they let me get from point a to b in comfort (in NYC, so walking a lot!) One caveat, I stick with straight leg jeans with sneaks ONLY. Bootcut may look oh so 2003, but skinnies + sneaks just make your feet look big and clumsy.

I don't wear anything besides designer sneakers. Why can't women be comfortable? Honestly. I don't want to wear heels to a club and have my feet hurt afterwards, I'd rather wear a pair of Common Projects, McQueen for Puma, or Nike Cole Haan Air's [mens only] then 300 dollar heels that hurt. Same price point, so really shouldn't it be about comfort and what makes your style then trying to fit into someone elses mold of what they should wear and when?

Unless they want to pay for my taxi charges all over Manhattan, my future medical bills, foot corrective surgery, etc etc.

that's silly. the point of personal style is wearing what feels comfortable on you. if you want to wear chucks one day, and louboutin's and a thick knit the next, you should just do it!

my only thinking is that the older one gets, the less torn to shreds their shoes should be! i'm not a 15 year old punk, my shoes don't need to be covered in holes!! however, it's completely appropriate to wear a cute pair of red sneakers to dress down, and give some personal edge to a more formal-ish outfit!

I love sneakers too! I doubt I'll ever give them up, they're just such a great option when I want to be casual, cute and comfy....

BUT I am soo over my Chucks! I really want to replace them with Pony's (that Italian sneaker brand) which I can't seem to find anywhere for women here in Toronto. Anyone know where I can find these babies? I don't want to order them online simply because I don't know if they run true to my size or what...

LOL....those quotes from Stacy and Lauren in the article are just funny and sad. Only a thief needs to run? Did either of these two consider that some people CANNOT wear heels and even certain flats....mire to the point that some don't want to? I don't see how teetering around in heels makes a woman somehow more adult.

Anybody from "What Not To Wear" in any format matters not to me, but I am intrigued by the Vogue girl and her mama. Projection a bit much?

As another 5'10er, "guest..Nov 16, 2007 12:27PM" says it best.

There is a huge variety of shoes that are comfortable in between "sneaker/gym shoe" and "stiletto heel". It really isn't an either/or choice we have to make.

As for me, gym shoes only in the gym.

It was only a few generations ago that jeans were only worn by workmen and rebels. Sneakers have evolved the same way. Generally, it is now the upper class who can dress casually and the middle class who have to follow a dress code.

I haven't worn sneakers since I was fourteen, except while working out, of coruse. Often, they're cheaply made; ugly; and, in the case of Converse, Pro-Ked, et. al., quite painful. There are plenty of better-looking (and better-feeling) options for those seeking comfort on the long walks to work.

To 12:27- I completely agree with 1:30. I'm 183cm tall, which I believe is around six feet, and regularly wear shoes with a 10cm heel. Enjoy the power trip of height. And if you decide to try it out, check out the sales at nicer department stores: the best shoes are always in your particular size range.

I'm with all of you tall girls - I'm 5'11 and I am almost always in 3+ inch heels.

That said, I think it's important to distinguish between a sneaker and a gym shoe. I would never ever be caught dead in a legitimate athletic shoe, but I love my Chuck Taylors. I prefer to wear them with something incongruously sexy to downplay their casualness...sometimes, a girl just needs to be comfy.

errr converse are another level of sneakers... I would not touch the rest of the sneaker-world. No-thank-you! I hate the look of clunky nike's or addidas sneakers. It just kills the outfit.

I work on film sets and at a studio and sneakers are de rigeur...I try to stick to off-white converse, and I have a pair of brown Keds slip-ons that I love. Otherwise I try to sneak in ballet flats and flat boots, or at least have a pair in my bag so I can go out after work without looking like I came from the gym! I'm used to it (being around equipment all day can be dangerous, and real shoes just arent practical sometimes) but it took a while.

I'm wearing my Chuck Taylors right now, at work. Somehow they work with my structured, but somewhat casual outfit. I actually sort of credit Fashionista for making me feel like I could fit them into my life a little more often.

I agree about athletic sneakers, though. I would not be caught dead in them unless I was actually in workout gear from head to toe. Why do they make those things so frigging ugly? Most of them are bright white, which just screams "NERD!"

I think that with the sleek design of many sneakers it's ridiculous ot think you should stop wearing them after 20. I wouldn't recommend wearing jeans that are too long with them but there is definitely a place for them in a 20+ year old woman's wardrobe.

"It really isn't an either/or choice we have to make."

Exactly!
