they were worn by actors in the theatre, especially for the performance of tragedies.

Raising the height of lead actors (and the characters they played) in Greek theatre, thereby making them seem more important than all of the others around them.

I know that tragic charcters in greek plays wore one shoe that was heavy to cause a limp.
Is that what you're looking for?

Yes, in the Greek theatre but only for specific characters -- namely the Gods.

I agree. I would bet it was to keep their feet from getting waste on them when walking in the streets.
