Do You Smell Your Age?

Dec 05, 2007 @ 10:37am

chanel no five bottle.jpgWe recently witnessed a friend buy a bottle of Axe body spray. We were a little surprised at his choice, since he’s not in high school or junior high.

He didn’t really get it when after spraying a bit of his Tsunami, we said, “This smells like a sixteen year-old boy!” Clearly, no one has ever told him that there is such a thing as smelling your age. (We now have “Terre d’Hermes” next to his name on our Christmas list.)

This reminded us of our own junior high days, when everybody wore Heaven from the Gap, and those who didn’t, doused themselves in Calgon body sprays from Bell’s Pharmacy downtown. But after high school, college and life, one typically leaves those scents behind and moves on to more subtle, sophisticated varieties. In short, you grow out of scents to fragrances.

To this day, the smell of anything fruity, vanilla-y or Herbal Essences-y makes us think of first period Geometry, and the smell of Chanel No. 5 immediately brings to mind our grandmother.

So what about you? Are you a college age girl wearing Frédéric Malle’s Carnal Flower (perhaps the most intoxicating, elegant aroma we have ever smelled)? Or an older woman, perhaps even mother, harboring Tommy Girl on your dresser?

I wear Tom Ford Black Orchid too, I think the sweetness in it is young but the muskiness of it makes it sophisticated.
Funnily enough when I was looking for my new scent I was in between Black Orchid, and one of the Stella McCartney fragrances (the one that she split in two smells? like peony and something else). I also loved Hermes Caleche but it was a bit out of my price range.

I wore Sunflowers from elementary school up until like junior year when I started wearing Grass by Gap, then they discontinued it and I was fragrance free until Marc put out his Grass splash which I wore until earlier this year.

I'm 25 and I'd say that's right on-age. The Tom Ford maybe skews and little old and the MJ a little young? I also sometimes rock the Fracas and Aomassai by Parfumerie Generale.

In high school, I also wore a men's fragrance called Tsar briefly. If I could ever caught the scent of it again, it would take me right back.

I wish I could wear Fracas but it turns disgustingly sweet on me.
I wore Lauren Ralph Lauren all through jr high, and then for my 16th birthday, my parents bought me Chanel Allure, that I wore every day til I was 25 or so.

It's very true. In middle school high school, Love's Baby Soft, Navy, Sand and Sable, and Sunflowers were in heavy rotation on my dresser. As I graduated (literally) to college, Ralph Lauren Romance and J'Adore were staples. By 23, it was Gucci Envy, and by 25 I feel in love with Marc Jacobs. Now that I'm 27 (almost 28) I've been wearing Burberry and Tom Ford. Can't wait to see what 2008 smells like!

I'm 25. I used to wear Chanel Allure, but find it a bit cute for me now, and moved onto No 5 a couple of years ago. (I prefer the warmer, sexier scent of the dry body oil spray to the parfum, they do smell different. But I switch around between them and sometimes layer them.) I'm not adventurous with perfume. I prefer a signature scent that people compliment me on, to a rack of different smells. And No 5 always garners compliments.

My first perfume was Givenchy's Shalimar (sixth grade- from the original Nieman Marcus in Dallas- by my Charles of the Ritz lipstick wearing, Joy perfumed, Feragamo'd great-grandmother... always was a classy dame); and in high school I remember "borrowing" my best friend's E. Lauder Beautiful and Poison. I wore Givenchy's Amariche in college- the only fragrance that men ever stopped me in the street about.

I went through Gucci Rush, MJ original fragrance, but now it's either Stella's Amber solid, Kiehl's musk, Flowerbomb, or Prada extreme.

I am always on the lookout for a real "fuck me" fragrance though. One that men will follow me down the hall for.

I wore CK One through junior high, Chanel No 19 and Allure all through high school, then Chanel Cristalle through college. They were all kind of young (except No 19), so I went on a frangrance hiatus until recently, when I bought Frederic Malle's Vetiver Extraordinaire on a trip to Paris (I'm 26 now). It's AMAZING, but when I got back home I found out that apparently it's usually marketed as a men's fragrance ... I honestly don't care, it's just such a gorgeous, woody, distinctive scent and somehow it totally fits my personality and style. I love it for all those reasons, plus the fact that it's somewhat atypical for a women's fragrance makes it more personal and kind of ageless. At least that's my hope :-)

Oh, and for men, I adore Burberry Touch. My boyfriend wears it, so the smell just kind of drives me crazy. I totally agree with 12:33, now it's just kind of part of him and I would be heartbroken if he changed it. Love it.

I've never understood "dressing your age" so it's not surprising I don't get "smelling your age." I think it's because I might be accused of being a little costumey. Sometimes I end up in jeans/tee/sneakers to a formal event or three piece suit to a dive bar. And I approach fragrance the same way; I must have 30 bottles and my collection includes mens & womens, cheap and expensive (but not that new insanely expensive Clive Christian one... yet). You know maybe this questions is a little Proustian; I think that the cheap stuff being associated with youth makes a lot of sense. But it also makes a lot of sense that people get comfortable with fragrance and have an especially hard time breaking out of their comfort zone. I'm told the part of the brain responsible for scent is the most primitive part so take that for what it's worth. PS: Terre d'Hermes is one of my all-time favs :)

I wore Ralph Lauren's Ralph and something from Abercrombie throughout high school and The Gap Scents when I was in middle school. The Gap has new scents out now and they're not bad in a generic way, but you get what you pay for...

A bottle of Chanel No. 5 parfum sustained me through college. In retrospect, Chanel No. 5 seemed like the more mature choice as opposed to Bath & Body Works/Victoria's Secret body splashes. Now whenever I smell No. 5, it just reminds me of chilly, windy days walking to class and rock concerts.

For me, scent depends more on my current mood, the occassion, what I'm wearing, how I want to feel and/or weather. I usually gravitate towards Miller Harris L'air de Rien, Anamor All That Matters, Serge Lutens Vetiver Oriental, and now that it's the holiday season, YOSH Sottile 1.61 layered with Winter Rose.

Perfume is probably what I "splurge" on, because my clothes/shoes are most of the time the approrpriate expense level for a 17 year old HS senior. But perfume is my big pleasure, my concession to money and expense....lately I've been loving Gaultier's Fleur du Male, even though it's for men. It's not as mature as Samsara, L'Heure Bleu, or Aveda Chakra II, which I went through phases of, but it's just perfect lately.

I've always skewed older perfume-wise. In 8th grade I pirated my mother's bottle of Burberry Brit and sometimes, if I felt extremely badass, her Lanvin Arpege.

My mom has always worn Chanel No. 5, and growing up, I didn't actually pay attention to the brand name--there were always a an assortment of perfumes on her vanity, because occasionally she'd mix it up and throw on something different.

It wasn't until I was about 17 that I was snooping through her cosmetics and thought, "Ooh, Mom has Chanel No. 5...classy!" So I took a whif because I wasn't sure what this classic perfume actually smelled like. Turns out, that was the easily-identifiable "Mom" scent that was so well-ingrained in my brain.

As for me, my middle/high school years smelled like Bath and Body Works "Pearberry." I'm a college senior and I LOVE Sui Dreams by Anna Sui. I switch between that and Clinique Happy, though sometimes I can't help but throw on a little SJP Lovely...I'll admit it.

i wore gap's day and earth in junior high. mixed it up with something that smelled like strawberries that i got from a body-shop knockoff. i wore revlon sunshine in high school until i found ralph lauren romance and the lily of the valley bath and body works.

why, WHY did body shop discontinue tobacco flower? i might still be wearing that were it around. my older sister stocked up, she still has some.

does anyone know of a good tobacco flower perfume still kicking around?

i'm 24 now and prefer to stick a dab of cinnamon oil in my hair and ylangylang in my cleavage rather than spray something premade on. i have scented lotions in cocoa butter and lemon creme. i'm also very particular about soap and deodorant fragrances. when i walk by a blooming lavender plant i make a habit of scooping some for my pockets/bra. my coffee/wine-heavy diet and herbal cigarette consumption adds to my spicy funk. everyone says i smell like oregano, cloves, 'a spice cupboard' and happy dirt. i think it's all about cultivating a scent of your own. if i were bottled i think the spokesperson would have to be patti smith in the 70s with less cigarette. that's not an insult.
i dabbled with perfume about six months ago and couldn't find anything i liked as much as my current funk.

Clinique Simply, which now that I smell it again, besides making me think of pink t-shirts and geometry, makes me think it's too old for a fourteen year-old but it might be a good new-mom scent (was that part of the ads?)

next I wore 212 Sexy which again I think was too sweet and old (and Evening!) to be wearing at fifteen.

since then, I have worn Polka Dot Skirt, an eau de toilette that I found at Anthropologie about four years ago. It's light and I love it, but I'm looking for something else. It makes me wonder, though, will the babydoll dress trend from last year, aren't young scents just as in for older women?

This one encapsulated my love of a vanilla-sugar like fragrance, with the smell of flowers that brings me back to my first childhood house.

Ha, I love how many people shared the Love's Baby Soft/Sunflowers moment...I definitely had both of those in my pre/early teens. Really, isn't Marc's Daisy sort of a high-rent version of Sunflowers? It just seems like such an obvious pander to the Teen Vogue crowd-- teens with spending power and internet-gleaned fashion savvy.

Anyway. Post-Sunflowers, I didn't wear perfume for many years, until my freshman year of college. Then I got Anna Sui's Love (in that cute butterfly bottle), which seemed appropriately youthful. A few years ago I decided to go a little more mature and started wearing Prada...but eventually gave it up because I encountered too many other women wearing it, particularly a notable ho in my building who doused herself with it.

So now, at 23, I'm wearing Agent Provocateur. I love it-- it sort of references "classic" perfumes without smelling to actually musty. Makes me feel like I'm wearing a vintage slip, and I don't feel like I'll age out of it anytime soon.

Everybody in my high-school years wore Kenzo(the with one) and Naomi-Naomagic.Everytime I smell them It really takes me 5 years back.

I think that what scent you wear, that is where you are in life.So quite common question on dates is what kind of parfume does he wear.It also says a lot about how well is he going to treat you.If he wears Axe...well...you will never get a Hermes parfum from him.:)

My wishes are-Tom Ford Black Orchid,Burberry-London and Marc Jacobs-Daisy.

Around the time I wore Diorissimo, my mother began wearing Paris by YSL, but she wore Norell for years, alternating with Youth Dew. Those both seem like very mature fragrances to me, and I never knew anyone my age who wore either one.

Hi I'm 21, it's quite funny you posted this item, because I used to be addicted to Chanel n°5, and wore it from age 16 to 20. However, as much as I loved it, it just didn't feel right on me... So I've switched to Coco Mademoiselle, for which I have been getting by far more compliments...! I guess I'll just go back to my good old n°5 in a few years (or decades...lol)
So yes, I definitely think some scents do have a certain age!

My first real perfume was Clinique Happy in eighth grade, though I definitely remember switching it up to some Bath and Body Works Vanilla in the winter.

I then regressed to Victoria's Secret body spray for freshman year of high school, but sophomore year found me with Ralph Lauren's Cool and Ferregamo's Encanto Dream, both of which are no longer sold (my good taste, of course).

I just recieved one of the new Gap fragrances for Haunkah (which, I'll admit, I do like because it smells winter-y and sexy), but I think I'm going to move on quickly to Vera Wang or Marc Jacobs for this, my junior year.

I recently brought a forgotten bottle of Dream body spray from the gap on a 195-mile run around our fair city, which I did as a relay with 12 other people with whom I ate, slept and lived in a van (I would say down by the river, but it's Tucson.)

Wielding the video camera on the way to the finish line, I asked everyone in the van what their favorite part of the race was. Two people answered "Your body spray!" It had been loaned out to the other runners as-needed, of course. We were a stinky bunch by the end.

Forgotten fragrances are great for the gym bag. Sometimes any smell other than your own will do.

But since my high school years I think I've always worn scents that weren't necessarily for my age but have always tended to fit my personality. The one that I can't put away right now is Bvlgari rose essentielle (which really reminds me of my gramma!), but I love it so much.

In college I wore Gucci Envy and Ralph Lauren Ralph. I realize now that Ralph was probably too young for me in college. After college I wore Thierry Mugler Angel for about 5 years before I got totally burned out on it. Now I wear Ralph Lauren Romance or L'Occitane 5 Roses. After reading everyone's posts, I see that Romance is probably too young for me (oops!). I'll have to check out the Tom Ford Black Orchid or maybe something even a bit more age-appropriate than that as well.

I then moved onto the standard scents of most teens ( why they had to be so over powering I have no idea), Tommy being the one I wore notoriously and also liked CK ONE.

I then turned to one of my staples and a more feminine scent than those over powering ones, HEAVENTLY by victoria secret.. one that I still use as a back up today.

I am 26 now and have found that Chanel suits me well. I bought Un Fleur, a limited edition and loved it so much I stock piled 5 of them ..sadly I am down to my last one. I recently also found I love Chance, my new smell for the year.. and I have never had more compliments on a scent in my life it is definately my new and all time favorite.

I'm 46, and love Jo Malone, French Lime Blossom and Orange Blossom, both are so feminine and pretty.

I mainly wear Chanel Chance which I've just acquired as my signature scent being a freshman in college. I think it is very fitting for my age. I also wear Dolce and Gabanna Light Blue which I just can't bring myself to get rid of, it's been my favorite since i was 16 hehe.

I'm in ninth grade, and I love wearing different perfumes or layering scents over each other. I usually wear Fresh Sugar Body Oil under Frédéric Malle’s Carnal Flower's, which lightens it up and makes it a lot sparklier and cleaner. Good for school, especially since I sit behind the one girl in Geometry that uses the most noxious-smelling shampoo. She's always flicking and tossing her hair around to get people to notice her, so when the smell gets too unbearable I just sniff my wrist surreptitiously and feel better. Ahhh, tuberose.

Besides florals, I also like some sharper, greener scents, particularly when I'm tired or in a bad mood, so I often wear Hermes Osmanthe Yunnan. Iris scents are good too, scents, like Prada Infusion d'Iris or the earthier, more vegetal Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist. I bought a bottle of it on a trip to Seattle, and it always reminds me of the green, mossy forests and rain-slicked ferns on Bainbridge Island. Surprisingly, I actually like Aquolina's Pink Sugar. Maybe it's because my best friend used to wear it all the time when she still lived in town. It's fun and probably a lot more age-appropriate then, say, Chanel Une Fleur de Chanel, my latest obsession.

I'm 37 and I have a pattern to my perfumes no doubt. I wore Chanel No 5 for 5 years - in various concentrations. One day I just tired of it and when the bottle was finished I swooped up Mitsouko and used that for 6 years exclusively. I will always love Guerlain's Mitsouko - it's a unique beautiful smell ,vintage ,classic, gorgeous. However, there are too many memories associated with that perfume for me now. So, after 6 Mitsouko scented years, I jumped ship for 24 Faubourg by Hermes and used that exclusively for 7 years . Again, I have tired of that particular scent, smell ,fragrance .my tastes seemed to have changed and I am now into gourmand fragrances like Confetto by Parfumum. I would never have guessed that my taste in perfume would change so much having perviously, literally turned my nose up at anything sweet and candy like.
I guess I sort of get the 7 year perfume itch or something.

White Shoulders and Emeraude - on the stank, drug store-cheapness tip, bitches! Or, when I'm feeling really frisky, I go for my custom-made Eau d'Ass! (Shh... I share it w/ Paris Hilton, my new BFF!) Holla!
