Wellies: An Overreaction?

Dec 04, 2007 @ 11:05am

wellingtons.jpgEvery time it looks like it might rain, we put on our rain boots.

This sometimes works in our favor, like on days when groups of people wearing normal shoes wait to skip over puddles at street corners, and you, in your rain boots, plop right through.

Other times, when the day turns out to be clear, you end up looking like an idiot wearing rubber boots for no reason.

We check the weather every day to see if rain boots will be needed, especially in the spring and fall. And as much as we love the feeling of marching down the street while everyone else is left to do a staring-down, careful walk, we know how hideous these rubber boots really look. Every time we leave for work wearing our cheap pair from Ricky's, we hear our boyfriend groan, and comment that they are totally unnecessary.

Do you put on rubber boots at the first sign of rain? Or do you avoid wearing them unless there's a hurricane about to hit?

galoshes only for snow.
for rain i wear sneakers, since all the soles in my boots are completely worn out and my feet get wet.

I'm tired of the galoshes with cutesy prints on them -- duck boots are so much cooler.

Do adults wear galoshes in the city?

Galoshes are actually rubber boots that are put on over regular shoes. They aren't the same thing as rain boots. I have a pair of plain black rain boots that I wear but only if it is already raining when I leave my house, otherwise I don't like to take the chance that I will end up sweating all day in rubber boots for no reason.

i think its ok to wear rain boots every now and then just not at every hint of rain.
we all know the so called meteorologists like to make some kind of prognostication even if its wrong. maybe they feel they need some ratings so they call for rain. next thing you know your girlfriend is waltzing out the door with her rainboots on thinking she is so smart. you sit there and smirk, knowing it is not going to rain that day.

i weather.com says its 70%+ of rain all day then definitely the rain boots. 40%-70% means sneakers :( (and i hate sneakers)

Like olyaiscool said, I look at the % chance of rail. Also, whether it's just going to be a drizzle or a storm. I drive to school (I don't live in the city) so I throw my wellies in the car and put them on if it's raining when when I get there.

Also, if one's wearing wide enough pants that fit over the wellies it can help hide them if one ends up feeling foolish.

Fun fact: Wellies were named after the Duke of Wellington, who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo.
That's how I was able to remember that in history class - Wellies and WATERloo. But then again, I'm a dork.

I invested in a pair of dark green Hunters ($98 at Nordstrom.com) that are definitely bulky but understated enough so that they don't scream "I'm wearing my rain boots today!" I usually pull mine on over shorts and tights or leggings and then layer up on top with tunics, short dresses and fitted sweaters. That way I feel like I'm at least trying to be fashionable instead of pulling on a sweatshirt and looking like a fisherman!

Yes and no. At first, when i got mine (black Hunters) i did, but when i got caught in just a sprinkle and my feet were literally roasting in them and i had to run back home and change into regular boots, i stopped. Now i just wear them in torrential rain. I also got a pair of Marc by Marc army green ones, which are lower on the calf and more flattering, that can be worn for longer periods because it has padding inside.

@ Lauramilli

Are you kidding, Hunters don't scream "I'm wearing my rainboots today?" I have a pair of black Hunters and just last week I got teased mercilessly about how huge they are. Just because Kate has a pair doesn't mean they are way above rainboot status.

You know, there are shoes, which look good and are water proof. I don't know about US, but in Europe there are brands that make their fashionable shoes with GoreTex layer, which will keep your feet dry and breathing (unlike the wellies).

I am on a CONSTANT search for decent looking rain boots. I don't understand why they all have to be shaped soo hideously and can't have a bit of a heel. I've seen some I think by Jeffrey Campbell that have a pointed toe, are a bit skinnier in the calf, and have a kitten heel, but I hate the colors and pattern offered. I would pay almost anything for a pair that allowed you to splash through those puddles but looked good. There's been a melding of form and function in nearly every other object "type".... I'm going to make these (if only) - I'm taking preorders now! Haha.

that last comment made me remember that i bought a pair of rain boots last week in h&m for $10, reduced from $80!! They are made by Tretorn (says it on the bottom). the ones I got look like Chloe's high heel docs and they are army green above the ankle height with a chunky heel, black laces. I don't even know if i will ever wear them but i could not pass them up. They also had the same idea in knee high pull ons without the laces. They really don't look all that much like rainboots (with the exception of the fact that they are rubber, LOL). They are worth checking out, if they re still there. btw, they run 2 sizes small.

I also got a great pair of rain boots by Tretorn. They are the Plask style. They're the best looking rain boots I've found, very comfy, and the red ones look sort of Wonder Woman-ish. You can find them on Zappos

I've got a pair of blue Marc by Marc ones with a heel that are awesome, the only way they look like rain boots is that they are rubber.

I also have a pair of Marc by Marc Jacobs boots that are racing green with a 3 inch heel and laces at the top. They are so cute I don't mind wearing them at all.
