Extreme Makeover: Flannel Lined Jeans

Dec 14, 2007 @ 9:31am

M23794_Red_Plaid.jpg Dear womens' wear designers:

We have an urgent plea.

It's getting colder, and those of us without town cars are freezing whenever we walk to the subways, the parking lots, or the bus stops.

Your clothes are not helping.

The open-toe-and-tights trend looks so chic, and hurts like hell in the wind. The beaded a-line dresses give incredible holiday shimmer, but their stones freeze cold against our skin. Cropped motorcycle jackets are not very warm, even with those amazing scrunched cashmere gloves that go with them.

But you know what's really warm? Flannel lined jeans.

We wore them across our prep school campus in 10 degree weather, and survived. We crashed in them during ski breaks. We slept in them while camping.

It would be so amazing to wear them to work with a cute blazer and heels. But right now, the only pair come from L.L. Bean, and look like they were cut especially for uncool moms.

Womens' wear designers, please study these jeans and then make them in a chicer cut - a lower waist, a slimmer leg, a boxy flare, something.

Like Luella Bartley's Gisele bag, a hot pair of flannel lined jeans could be your best selling item ever.

Please, get going - we're freezing over here in our little shrunken jackets from Miu Miu!

J. Crew makes some flannel lined chinos. The navy ones are pretty cute: http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/product.jhtml?id=prod89393241&catId=

I saw a woman with those jeans on on the path this week... At least jeans in general are warmer than work pants.

When I browsed though my L.L. Bean Catalog, I was thinking the SAME thing! I'm thinking of getting some slim snowboard pants for taking my dog out in the morn.

Oooooh I second that wholeheartedly... as well as the bit about the 36" inseam. Pleeeease! And less than $500, if possible.

Cutely written post. Anyway, ages ago Gap did some fleece lining...

I just had an idea- what if they made them uber luxurious and did the lining in a silk cashmere blend?

Actually, in design school, the marketing department asked us to do this. however, two layors of thick fabric will always come out bulky, and unless you find a stretch flannel and stretch denim, they can't be too fitted or you'd never be able to sit down. It's an almost impossible task to make flannel lined jeans that are slimming. This is a task for an engineer. I second the tights under your pants idea as more viable. Fashion designers may make dreams come true, but they can't defy physics.

In the meantime, why don't you do what I've done all my life- wear black tights under your jeans. Wolford makes polar tights and they are REALLY warm. Not the most comfy, especially with a tighter cut jean, but they really work if you are walking around the city all day. Sorry @ stephanie- chinos are for suburban soccer moms. I told my husband that if he ever sees me wearing something like that he should kill me (lol?). And I am someone's mom, too.

Get yourself over to an REI or Dick's Sporting Goods. I know that's anathema to most fashion people, but they make really great cold weather stuff that you can use for layering.
