Faran's Too Fat For Her Jeans

Dec 04, 2007 @ 3:26pm

Fat Jeans 005.jpgWe interrupt our usual stream of models and magazines to bring you something real:

This morning, I rolled out of bed, reached for my wide leg Saltworks magnolia jeans, and almost couldn't button them.

Excuse me?

I ran through a list in my mind of what could have caused it. A chocolate chip cookie instead of dinner? Relentlessly chugging soy milk at my desk? Skipping Pilates for another party?

"It happens to everyone," says Kelley Culp, a stylist and fashion editor who - disclaimer - is also a colleague at my other home base, Page Six Magazine. "In fact, the only people I haven't seen it happen to are celebrities, but that's because if pants don't fit them, they'll just say 'Oh, I don't like these, I won't wear them' before they even try them on at a shoot."

Which is totally what I should have said to my closet this morning. Instead, I took down Kelley's tips for how to disguise the issue:

"You don't have to throw out your jeans," she says, "Because everyone's body fluctuates, and the weird thing is, sometimes your stomach doesn't look so great but your butt looks amazing. So my biggest trick is to get a blousy shirt - not a tunic that covers up your butt, but just something with more volume that hits at your hip - and pull a cropped jacket over it. Then add a lot of necklaces and draw all of your attention up to your face and down to your butt. Under no circumstances should you throw a big cardigan over the problem, because then you can tell."

Good to know. Thank you Kelley.

And now, back to the dressing room.

my problem is: i always fit into my jeans for years, for 10 years at least and i am 25. but my muffin's getting bigger and bigger. so i can't throw away my jeans cause i will get the same size again. but my muffin will be there. i end up throwing away my bikinis. so you're good faran, no worries.

be careful about soy milk. it has high amounts of estrogen that can cause hormonal problems. i was drinking a lot of soy (in jamba juice) and i was starting to feel like i was getting hot flashes.......stopped drinking soy, and that stopped too. think about drinking rice milk...........lol sorry i just had to tell you about this.

soy formula also has been in the news lately as causing young girls to develop earlier...

Faran, you are so brave to admit this publicly! I have this problem constantly, in fact, I have several pairs of Acne Hex DC's in different sizes, as well as vintage Levis in different sizes to accomodate my fluctuating poochy area. I was always a skinny minny until i hit 30 and then it was all downhill from there, even with exercise. We all have this problem. Maybe if more people like you talk about it, we won't beat ourselves up and feel bad for the entire day because of it. Bravo!

sure leia. i have also been meeting more and more female vegetarians that are avoiding soy because of possible cyst issues and so forth. unfortunately, it is not the miracle product that the food industry makes it out to be. just google "soy danger." it is in small doses from everything from chocolate (soy lecithin) to processed foods so it is not about avoiding it entirely as it is to just be aware of the dangers of having soy milk constantly.

My weight fluctuates every few weeks (corresponding with lady magic time) so I have certain pairs of jeans that I won't go near on those specific days.

I had the same problem back when I attempted veganism; it also negatively affected my male vegan friends. Almond milk is a great-tasting alternative.

As for the main topic of the post: I commiserate. My problem, however, is with the thighs. The same thing happened to me this morning. I finally got up the courage to wear those ridiculous-but-fabulous copper Balenciaga breeches, and could barely squeeze them on. Needless to say, they were abandoned.

One other thing- I know that Kelley said not to cover it up with a big cardigan, but those drapey, bably dollish Marni or Marni-esque tops are great over jeans when you have days like this. No one knows you can't button your jeans, and you look incredibly chic.

Faran, I kind of love you for posting about this. It happens to all of us, it's just so refreshing to see someone actually admit it on a fashion blog. Thank you!

That's so nice to hear that even fabulous fashionistas have this problem sometimes;) My weight always grows during the school year and then I loose weight during summer, swear that I'm not going to get fatter again...and of course, come December, I have to go back to my wider trousers. And, yeah, there is the "lady time". I'd be able to live with this, but my clothes only look good on me when I'm thinner....I can't wait to be out of school and start making some money to update my closet;)

At these times, I love skirts or dresses with cashmere/wool tights. So much more forgiving!

I'm a size zero, and this happens to me too! I thought it was just me, and it's so hard to admit something like this, especially when you're thin - it's not as visible. i wish clothing companies could somehow make jeans that were a bit tighter in the thighs and looser in the waists.... b/c i always feel like jeans are the opposite that way, at least for me!

I am what you call an apple-- ridiculously skinny legs and hips, but thick (by comparison) waist. On top of this, I tend towards the belly-bloat.

My solution: take a knife to the button hole and make it just a teensy bit bigger. That way, I can wear jeans that fit my hips and legs, no matter how bloated I get, without creating a muffin.

It works!

This has been me lately. After stopping birth control I've gained a few pounds and none of my pants feel the same. It's depressing. To the gym I go!
