Hermes Has Class

Dec 04, 2007 @ 10:24am

hermes scarf.jpgCollege is when most women invest in their first big fashion purchase - at 19, many of our friends got those Murikami Vuitton bags; meanwhile, we discovered Miu Miu could actually be worn to class.

But perhaps the girls at Lafayette College have us all beat-

Their campus store just launched a limited edition Hermes scarf, designed just for the school

The scarf commemorates the 250th birthday of France's Marquis de Lafayette, for whom the school is named. It was designed by Texas artist Kermit Oliver, and came into being when a Lafayette alum living in Paris met a member of the Hermes family, convincing him to do an accessory for the school.

The scarf for the school is very limited edition, and sells for $325 at the school store - though there are other, more common scarves with a Lafayette theme coming from Hermes this month.

We wonder if it'll replace Gucci print bags as the way to get into a sorority, but doubt it, since it doesn't have any huge logos...

That is awesome! How can we get Hermes to design a scarf for our college?!

"we discovered Miu Miu could actually be worn to class..." maybe at Columbia or NYU! My first big purchase in college was the rent on my apartment. Now that I graduated, it's my student loans. Not every one that goes to college (or their parents) are buying $1,000 handbags. please.

My first fashion purchase was in college, but it was a sweatshirt from the first Marc by Marc collection that cost me $98. Hermes for an American college? totally weird.

Also: Murakami.

I wore Hermes scarves in college and people thought I was weird. Though I will say they made great halter tops for frat parties.

Anyone want to share their first Hermes scarf?

I sort of agree with the second guest comment. I don't think most people can afford miu miu and louis vuitton in college unless they get money from their parents. And at nineteen you should learn to cope without that.

My first (and only for the moment)hermes scarf i got a month ago, at the tender age of 26!

one of the sr. execs here at work (and one of the most glamourous ladies i've ever met) donated it to a charity auction we were organizing at work. well, because i was so busy running around helping out with the auction, i didn't actually have time to BID on anything.

and a colleague ended up winning the scarf at an amazing price! i pleaded with her for a week to let me buy it from her and she finally relented after realizing that it would get more wear out of it from me:)

Wow, that's pretty incredible. But even if Hermes did a scarf for my school (yeah right) I wouldn't be able to afford it.
But if I wanted it badly enough (as a momento/for sentimental value - like a class ring - in addition to it being Hermes) I might ask my parents for it as one big Christmas or birthday gift.

That scarf isn't in the bookstore for the students, it's there for the alums, alum wives, and parents--i.e. the people with money. It's interesting and cool that Hermes made a limited edition scarf for an American college, but to pretend that a 19-year-old would buy it is a little crazy.

I bought my first big buy, a Miu Miu handbag during college (mind you, I'm still in college) and I bought it with my own money that I earned by myself. Students can work part-time after all.

I agree, the scarf idea is kind of cool, but I'm just starting out in university and I think the idea of bringing designer stuff to school is kind of ridiculous. You end up looking like a kook because school is for...well, learning, not a fashion runway.

Does anyone else think the scarf is hideous?

Jacqueminette - uh, yes. Very very much agreed. It looks like the opening pages of my fourth grade American History textbook. Eww. I'm having flashbacks of my elementary schoolteachers. Not cute at all.

guest @3:44pm, please elaborate on what kind of learning you're talking about because if learning about dead philosophers is all you do in those 4 years I feel badly for you. God forbid people appreciate fashion and want to embrace it, there shouldn't be a restriction on what location can be turned into a runway.

that being said, I do think the idea of this particular scarf is kinda gross. I def agree with Jacqueminette.
