The Christmas Sweater Party: A Hallowed Tradition

Dec 11, 2007 @ 1:04pm

penguin1.JPGOver the past few years, holiday parties celebrating all that is hideous, sequined, and Christmas-themed have cropped up all over the country. And the dress code is sweaters – the uglier the better.

But if you want to stand out in a sea of tacky knitwear and take home the ugliest sweater prize, (oh yes, there's a prize,) you'll have to dig a lot deeper than a plain old Santa sweatshirt - or the reindeer knits worn by Colin Firth in Bridget Jones.

This type of shopping calls for Ebay. Our favorite knitted uglies include a navy acrylic number featuring hugging reindeers wrapped in an attached faux scarf, and a tomato red, zip-up turtleneck cardigan depicting a family of caroling penguins.

You can always tone down your crazy Christmas shirt with tight black leggings and high-heeled boots, especially if dressing up for parties comes second in your book to flirting.

But of course, if you're too cool to really participate in the Ugliest Christmas Sweater Party, you can always show up in Chanel's adorable Penguin take.

Ha! Neither of those eBay finds comes close to the late-80's monstrosity I have lurking in my closet. I knew that old thing would be good for a laugh someday. Just hand me the trophy now, ladies.

LOL! I am going to one on Saturday. I hit up Goodwill and bought a royal blue cardi with sewn on snow men ALL over the front and one on the back for an extra touch. ha ha. I bought my best friend one that is bright red, says HAPPY NEW YEAR in huge caps 4 times and then says 2000 at the bottom... oh yeah, it has shoulder pads! We better win ;) And after the party, if we venture out, you can bet your new ankle boots I'll be changing into something that won't make people vomit. ha ha. I can't wait.

I'm attending an Ugly Sweater party soon...I think we may rename it to "midwestern moms party" and serve hot dish aka casserole.
