Fashion Is Fun

The Lady Is Smoking

Le Smoking.jpgOn our way to work today, we saw a woman who made us turn.

She was wearing an all-black pantsuit with a black scarf and gloves - probably a lawyer, we thought. We wouldn’t have noticed her at all if it wasn’t for one thing: her otherwise funereal ensemble concluded with a pair of mens’ wingtips.

She’d managed to turn a boring, single-note work uniform into an outfit - kind of like adding a fun dot to straight line, she turned herself into a walking exclamation point.

It was the first time we’d ever seen menswear on a regular person (i.e. not a 6’ tall model or a theatre actress out for a cigarette break,) that actually looked like clothing, and that the wearer rocked completely as her own. We don’t know if we could take it much further than maybe a vest (and we’d die if we could actually get away with suspenders,) but we certainly stop and admire those who can pull it off so well.

Do you ever wear styles truly inspired by menswear?

As much as possible, I decided when I was younger than I loved the look and decided that it had this very strong appeal that could easily be made feminine. It's a great conversation starter..." Hey, isn't that a men's shirt?" the only thing that is hard is finding the smallest size possible and then tailoring it to be even smaller, guys Smalls are like a medium large for women.

i do almost everyday! I have to wear a dark suit to work and most of the girls accessorize with a brightly colored scarf but I like to flip the script and wear a tie or suspenders (not both at once) and an ivory button up shirt. oxford pumps arent a bad way to go either!

I bought pair of dark brown boots in the wingtip style just the other day, and I love them! I feel like the one menswear touch really gives the rest of my outfit an unexpected, subtle edge.

Guys are lucky. It is so much easier for them to get beautifully tailored, well-cut garments.

Ties are great (though usually when I wear a skirt or heels), and I've been sporting oxfords for years. They are comfortable, beautiful, and wonderfully stuffy. Wingtips are a little too rococo for my taste, and two-toned ones are just tawdry.

Of course! I used to envy the simplicity and coolness of classic menswear, but then I realized nothing was stopping me from indulging myself. One of my favorite looks is a pair of men's chinos (Gap makes perfect ones) belted on the hips, rolled at the bottom with scrunched socks and a pair of stacked heels, with an oxford, tie, and classic boy's blue sports jacket from Brooks Brothers, topped off with a beret. Lately I've been sporting a lot of pencil skirts with suspenders and wing-tips. I've found some great old Ferragamo ones for next to nothing on ebay.

I recently bought a pair of gold mens brogues from Office and they are brilliant. I've been wearing them with black skinny jeans and a house of holland tshirt. Once I did try wearing them with suspenders, but I couldn't do it every day!
