Sex and the Shopping

sjp undies.jpg When Star Wars got re-released, it licensed new toys.

When Sex and the City gets re-released, it'll license new underwear.

That's the news today from Cosabella, the mass market lingerie line that will churn out new bras for Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda - plus all their wannabes.

The idea sounds like a perfect business move for the Sex and the City producers, since the entire success of their show was based on women thinking they actually were each of the characters. And we expect the different styles of lingerie to correspond with each different character - Charlotte's will be lacy and pink, Samantha's will be see-through and edible, and Miranda's will be boxer shorts.

There's only one question we have -

If Sarah Jessica Parker is entering into a licensing deal with Cosabella, doesn't that prevent Steve + Barry's from releasing a similar lingerie line with her? Surely all women need a bra that costs $6.99...

Honestly, this kind of sounds like a bad idea.

No, I don't think it interferes if Cosabella is profiting off the Sex and the City brand and "Carrie Bradshaw" while SJP herself is aligned with Steve & Barry's.

Licensing deals are carefully carved out and rights are assigned by territory, market, target audience, price point, materials, etc. The deal points are extremely specific - so no, it shouldn't pose a problem, especially if the scenario described above "SJP" for Steve & Barry's comes into play.

I don't think it's even an issue.
If the different styles of lingerie are made to correspond with each different character it's clear that Cosabella is only interested in Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, Miranda and not the actresses behind the characters.
