The LA Times has a step-by-step guide to getting cat-eyes today. The demonstration on using liquid eyeliner to wing-tip your lashes is brilliant... if you're still into the trend. The problem is, the look is everywhere, and sometimes it looks perfect - on Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse, on the Versace runway, on the Lower East Side, on the original cast recording of Sweet Charity. The problem comes when the look suddenly smears everywhere, like runny eyeliner that's six month's old. It's worn with preppy cardigans and pretty poufy pink frocks, and just like bubble skirts or skinny jeans, if girls play into the look because it's trendy and not because it's an extension of their style, it may look a little forced. Of course, now that Hannah Montana has a best-selling record, the blur between what's popular and what's actually rock 'n roll has yawned substantailly - maybe eyeliner is the least of anyone's identity issues.
