Would You Wear A Beret?

Dec 14, 2007 @ 12:00pm

Versace beret.jpgWe’ve been seeing berets on the street a lot lately, and we have to say, we’re torn.

Some people think a beret is pure costume, no matter how cute the girl sporting it, and others see a French style of hat appropriate at any time.

We kind of think the question of whether or not to wear a beret depends on the wearer herself.

While intern Britt actually looks cool and kind of urbane in hers, we know that if we ever tried it, we’d look like Chris from Project Runway had picked out our outfit that morning - or that we were going to a children's book convention, dressed as Madeline.

Of course, the outfit holding it up depends on the way the hat is interpreted, too. We wouldn't suggest wearing one with a jumper and knee socks, but we would suggest jeans tucked into boots with a loose sweater and coat.

Would you wear a beret? Or is this one accessory better relegated to Halloween parties?

I love berets! Wore them when i was little and i still do - or actually, started wearing them again, after a 9year break. I'm not keen on the huge oversized berets,i have to say though. my favorite one is red and 2 "summer-beret" which basically just means that the fabric is lighter. whenever i wear it out (usually with a LBD, black tights and killer heels) everyone always tells me how cute and cool it is. boys and girls. you gotta love them!

unless we are talkin about birkenstock-wearing bagladies and the likes.

Berets were the WhoWhatWearDaily.com post today; is this the inspiration for this article?

Dear Miss Cynthia Bell,

Ha, that's funny- no, we were actually inspired by our intern, Britt, who wears them all the time. I didn't know about the WWWD until you commented about it.

i actually used to wear berets all the time, before they were all over the runways. cute and comfy. plus, if you pull them down over your ears (you know, to actually keep them warm) you can really avoid the cliche. now my air is in a cute boy crop that isn't so beret-friendly (what am i supposed to do with my drawerful of them?). If you're not sure if you can carry of the traditional style try a knit one - i used to get mine from etsy.

I relate to the 1:02 post! When I was 11, and obsessed with French culture, I had a different beret for every day of the week. Once I hit high school and college — where I was a French major — it felt like overkill. 15 years later, I still have a few of my childhood favorites that I have started pulling out of the closet. I like wearing one in a color that is completely different from everything else I'm wearing. On Saturday night, I wore a black skirt and an old Marc by Marc Jacobs blazer in navy, with miniscule red stripes. I topped it off with a bright red beret, and I got so many compliments! I think the timing once again feels right.

I was unsure, but they looked so cute on everyone in the WWWD piece today, that I have to vote yes.

I think they're cute and I might wear one if I didn't live in the suburbs, but my name is actually Madeline so people would start singing the song

Yes, I'd wear a beret. In fact, I plan on getting one at the outlet mall soon.

Halloween? Do people regularly dress up as French people or something? Tres bizarre!

i wear berets about every other day-- i swtich back and forth between my chunky knit off-white one (for when it's acutally cold) and my little red one(for when i want to pretend i'm a french girl).

i love berets - i have an oversized one from united colours of benetton. i have mainly to ways to wear it: with wideleg trousers and a striped tank top, and with skinny jeans, flats, & a long tank top. i love it! brings out my parisian heritage!
