Would You Wear Red Lipstick?

Dec 12, 2007 @ 2:14pm

livtyler.jpgThings that could go wrong while wearing red lipstick:

* You might want to kiss a boy - too bad!

* You might forget to re-apply post holiday cocktail.

* You might have to answer to Marilyn Monroe all night (yes, this happened once).

However, you will feel insanely glamorous, or at least we do. The shade in our vintage caboodle is MAC's Ruby Woo. It's so matte it's almost powdery which is perfect if you tend to forget about your make-up once it's on your face.

When we put it on at night, usually with something casual and neutral (because, well, we can't pull off neon outfits with flaming red lips), we feel kind of transformed and very confident.

But best thing about the retro look might be the interesting people we meet. Maybe they like looking at cartoonish lips move, but we like to think it makes us mysterious, or at least different from every other girl at the party.

Do you wear red lipstick? What's your favorite shade?

I still haven't been able to find the right shade of red for me, but I do think that red lips are great!

i ALWAYS wear red lipstick when i go out; it's been my trademark since my senior year of high school. my tried-and-true red is clinique's deep lacquer, which i don't think they make anymore and i've had to buy on ebay. it stays on forever and then fades to a pretty stain.

Whenever I wear red lipstick, the street vendor who sells me my coffee gives me a free doughnut.

I use Red and Noir Red by Besame. I use a lip brush to apply them and blend them together.

Lover by Chanel... insanely good red. Works for my skin tone (I'm Af-Am) as well as for my Asian and white friends. And it has that hardcore push-click packaging that won all those awards. But does tend to dry out over the course of an evening, so you must reapply on the regular.

And I also love Chantecaille lipsticks... long-lasting and moisturising!

I love red lipstick. I'm a very pale redhead, and it just looks really dramatic, which is always fun. My favorite colors are Viva Glam II by MAC and #60 Passion by Chanel.

Revlon Super Lustrous lipstick in Cherries in the Snow. The perfect cool red for fair, pinkish complexions. Also makes teeth look super-white.

Yes, I wear red lipstick almost every day. I think it looks very chic with only a bit of mascara.

Most of the time, I wear Americana by Vincent Longo when I want something semi-sheer, and Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited 134 (Intense True Red) when I want something very bright and matte. They're both good on very fair complexions.

I wear Lover by Chanel as well (I'm REALLY pale but peachy), topped with Stila lip pot in Cerise. So pretty, but I only can pull off red at night........

I was lipstick impaired for years and years, but with the acquisition of a very grown-up job a few years back, I started wearing red lipstick to all client meetings. (or reddish, anyway- true reds look a bit odd on me.)
Currently in the makeup bag: Red Siren lip stain from Mark, Cranberry Cream from Clinique, and Wanton from Benefit.

i think mine is called Revlon Lip Glide in ruby slippers.

it's bright red but pretty, and super shiny. yeah, it totally makes the boys in the bands look at you.

thanks for the tip, i think i want a more matte look now.

I love the IDEA of red lipstick, butI'm afraid to wear it. I got it done at MAC for my prom a few years back and I chickened out right before I got in the car. I just felt lke everyone as looking at me. But not in a good way. If I found a more natural shade, I'd be all over it.

Totally!

I like Clinique's Red Red Red. The shade is perfect, but it tends not to stay put as well as my other two favorites: New York Red and Fire, both by Chanel.

I also rock the orange lipstick, especially in the summer. Make Up For Ever has an excellent orange lipstick.

I like Mac's Lady Bug--it's sheer enough that you don't need lipliner or a brush to apply, and if it smudges you don't look like a crazy lady.

As much as I would absolutely love to wear red every single day, my complexion (with darned undertones with red tinges) make it difficult. I've found that a subtle alternative is a red tinted gloss or balm, like Sula's Stilleto Red Lip Balm duo. The sheer coverage saves you from stressing out over transferring your lip color, and it isn't sticky like a lot of other glosses.

my mom always wore red lipstick so i grew up thinking that was the prettiest. i don't usually wear red lipstick, for special occasions i do, but i always wear red lip gloss. it's not as harsh and i don't feel too dramatic while i'm at school

omg I love ruby woo, and i always have a few revlons kicking around. there is a (perhaps discontinued?) longwearing covergirl that i used to use on stage called cinnabar- it was red, but had enough brown to give really sharp definition. i passed it on as a tip to my gramma, the red lipstick master. that was a proud day.

but! i must say that i also still rock the vintage caboodle... mine's pink and purple, with cutouts from sassy decoupaged onto it!

I love Ruby Woo, but it looks good on everyone else, not me. NARS makes some of the best reds- I used to mix Scarlet Empress and Shanghai Express for the perfect shade of red, and I found out the Sofia Coppola did that too! Now I alternate between Shanghai Express, or Lipstick Queen by Poppy King in Saint Rouge or Rouge Sinner- they are all great reds. Lipstick Queen can be found at Barneys. The main thing to take into account is the color of your skin in contrast to the red. Also, so I don't look too harsh, after I apply it, I kind of smoosh it into my lips so it looks like i am not trying too hard. i love that look.

NARS jungle red. Great pigment, great shade, great texture, long lasting, and NO SMELL. My mom and older women I know tend to complain about the smell of lipsticks (especially estee lauder) being nauseating.

good lord, wearing red lipstick is not that crazy. I wear it all the time, I just tone it down by smooshing it around on my lips and put lip balm over it so it doesn't look too harsh during the day. I'm fair with dark red hair and Passion by Chanel is my favorite.

I bought this wonderful lipstick when I was in Poland this summer; don't think it is available anywhere in the states. I have worn it maybe once (and was sure to put concealer on my lips beforehand, to make the color pop), but it was fantastic. It made me seriously consider wearing it more often.

Mac's "Rocker" red is my favorite. It's a cooler shade of red, as in, not a warm red. A true red, only just a hair darker with glitter in it. I don't think the glitter shows on my lips much.

I love wearing red, it's hard to maintain throughout the day but it looks great on my fair skin and dark hair.

Besides, who doesn't want a lipstick called "rocker"?

MAC's Morroccan Frost with a layer of lip balm underneath and maybe on top to cut down on the frost. its the only red that doesnt look pink and clownish on my very fair skin.

I'd actually start investing in make-up if I knew of the right red. I have yet to see a dark-skinned (not olive dark, dark brown)woman genuinely look good in red lipstick. I pretty much just put red lipstick on my list of things not to do...like leotards. ;)

Ruby Woo has got to be my #1 pick for red lipstick. MAC is amazing with colors. I also like their "Eager" shade of lipstick. It's kind of bright orange, works well with me 'cause I'm a bit tan.
