Would You Wear Barrettes?
Jan 02, 2008 @ 3:49pm
Two weeks ago, I cut off all my hair.
The good news - at least for some of you commenters - is that I no longer look like "a rabbit with curls." The bad news is, it was pretty terrifying, and now I have to figure out how to style it without looking like I cared enough about my hair to style it. This was simple with a really long, tangled, tumbling sheet of blonde ringlets, but now it's a little harder, and I've found myself clinging to things I put away in 9th grade:
Barrettes.
They keep the little wispy pieces out of my face; they clamp down the one curl that likes to stick straight up like a Gilda Ratner character; and - ooh - you can get little ones with hearts on them at Marc Jacobs.
But there's still something infantile about the whole thing, the way my mom used to frown in high school when I wore a ribbon in my hair.
Is it okay for an adult woman to walk around with barrettes? Or should I use more discrete bobby pins or even an extra thwomp of gel?
[Actually, I get a little thrill out of the barrettes because they've never been able to hold my hair before - it was too long. I bought a huge pack of plastic ones at CVS yesterday, the kind with butterflies and flowers. I took the little ones with teddy bears and coated them in black shiny nail polish - but again, maybe that looks less Soho and more like homeroom...]
It's Official: Heatherette for M.A.C
Jan 02, 2008 @ 3:02pm
In August, we reported that Heatherette was in talks with a makeup line for Estee Lauder.
Now that it's sealed and dealed, here's the rest of the story:
Their collection will be for M.A.C and it debuts in March, just after their Fall '08 runway production.
The line includes nail polish, eyeshadow, lipstick, and pancake base, and comes packaged in day-glo hot pink plastic. While there won't be an ad campaign for the line, there will certainly be promotional photos and cute makeup counter displays, so keep your eyes peeled for Miss Lydia Hearst, who's modeled for M.A.C in the past.
Meanwhile, other fashion brands are also releasing new cosmetics this season: Calvin Klein just resurrected their entire beauty division, which has been in hibernation since Gwyneth and Brad were engaged.
Love Is Blind. We Are Not. High Times!
Jan 02, 2008 @ 2:06pm
WHICH socialite and vague designer was so high on ecstasy on New Year's Eve that she fell out of her cab on her way to a tiny, exclusive, and smoke filled tavern in the West Village? She might not have even remembered the next day, if it weren't for the massive bruise on her...

"Nobody believes I'm American... so it's fun to shock them with that." -- Missouri native and Nina Ricci campaign face Karlie Kloss, 15, on what it's like to work in Paris. From Teen Vogue.
Britney Copies Marc
Jan 02, 2008 @ 1:11pm
We wish Britney Spears would embrace Marc Jacobs' sartorial sense, but until that happens, at least she's stolen his business plan:
Her latest fragrance, Curious ♥ Heart, comes with a password protected website, just like Marc Jacobs' Daisy did last year.
But you had to be invited, via mysterious email, to take part in Marc's Daisy website, while Britney's access comes with every proof of purchase:
The password for her new site is attached to every Curious ♥ Heart bottle.
And while Marc's website enlisted fans to win a Stam bag, Britney's will get you a Nintendo, a trip to Total Request Live, or an Apple gift certificate.
The strategy seems pretty smart to lure Britney's tween fans (and more importantly, Britney's grown women fans who still wish they were in Junior High) - maybe if it works, the wayward pop tart will start copying Marc's style icons, too - though she might not be sophisticated enough to get the beauty of Meg White...
Work for House of Holland!
Jan 02, 2008 @ 12:38pm
If you live in London and want a new gig, pay attention:
Henry Holland needs a new studio assistant to keep his busy, bubbly factory up to speed.
You should be good at listening, always being early, always being organized, always being calm, and generally in love with fashion, music, parties, and the British style scene.
If you want to apply, email a brief resume and introduction to info@houseofholland.co.uk
And yes, it would be tempting to make the whole thing in rhyme, but we're not sure it would work, unless it was exceptionally good (or at least ridiculously funny).
Bonne chance!
Mean Girls Get Work
Jan 02, 2008 @ 12:19pm
We're so bored by the Top Model marathon running on VH1 that our thoughts turned to that other posing show, A Model Life, which followed five girls on the Next new faces board through their first six months of stomping and shooting.
We were grateful for the (mostly) real-life look at the modeling business, with most of the show's stars clocking in at sixteen or seventeen years old. And although British cutie Abigail Fox came out on top, the program's resident snarler, Angelika, was booted from the agency only to book more campaigns (so far) than anyone else.
Besides landing as the poster girl for Mike & Chris (our favorite outerwear label, maybe ever), Angelika also booked work with Smashbox Cosmetics and now with Alpine Star, a sportswear company with a two-page ad in Nylon and Seventeen.
The ad stars Angelika, who shoots a glowing glower into the camera that basically says "I'm getting paid to be pretty, and you're not."
Well, yes, that's true, but...
It's Official: Anne Hathaway for Lancome
Jan 02, 2008 @ 11:07am
As it so often happens, the rumors about that pretty celebrity were true:
This year, Anne Hathaway will debut her first campaign for Lancome, following months of speculation that the beauty brand owned by L'Oreal had signed another actress in the wake of Kate Winslet's campaign for Tresor fragrance.
It should be noted that after Winslet's commercials aired, Tresor sales went up 20%, although we would speculate that's partly because Tresor so rarely advertises, especially on television (and we say this despite the fact that Kate Winslet is our favorite actress ever).
Now Hathaway will work with the broader Lancome brand to entice smart young things to pick up a blush brush, which should be an easy task for the Vassar graduate who's made a pretty solid career out of transforming from gawky to gorgeous in each one of her movies.
The new contract will allow her to do the same thing in ad campaigns - except this time with branded $23 mascara (which - confession - we use every day).
Margiela Makes Car Seats
Jan 02, 2008 @ 10:01am
Our latest glossy crush is Intersection magazine, an art book that fuses industrial design with fashion. We've never really been into cars and planes, but seeing a photo spread of Louis Vuitton accessories shot through the windows of a chopper pretty much had us sold.
Now Intersection announces a new project where designers around the world are making them car seats, to be unveiled in their Spring issue.
Those who've enlisted include the denim wunderboys from Ksubi, the chic French misfits at Bless, and Maison Martin Margiela, the enigmatic fashion house that caused the biggest stampede we've ever seen at Paris Fashion Week.
As to where to put those designer car seats - maybe they could go in the Eddie Bauer Landrover, the Betsey Johnson corvette, or the Gap Vespa, which could be the cutest vehicle we've ever seen.
Saleisha Is Really Pretty; Isn't Walking Fashion Week
Jan 02, 2008 @ 9:48am
We hear from a source that although Saleisha has indeed signed her Elite contract and strolled through their New York office, she won't be hitting the New York Fashion Week circuit - in fact, the agency won't even be sending her on runway castings.
Also, although Elite models are routinely signed for three-year contracts, the binding papers for the Top Model winner may be a shorter one-year agreement.
So what will Saleisha be doing instead of fashion shows and castings?
"Press appointments and Cover Girl filming takes up the bulk of her first few months," says the source, "And then it's more likely she'll go out for sportswear campaigns, like Jaslene Gonzales did last year."
Meanwhile, Elite has another relative newbie who actually could be America's next top model - their fifteen-year-old foundling, Karlie Kloss, is on the cover of Teen Vogue this month with Chanel Iman and Ali Michael.
Jude Law to Play Halston?
Jan 02, 2008 @ 9:00am
Shirley Maclaine and Audrey Tatou will both play Coco Chanel (in separate projects) and now a London rumor pins Jude Law down for the lead role in Halston, an upcoming biopic.
The movie would be produced by Harvey Weinstein, who recently bought the Halston label, and hired Tamara Mellon and Rachel Zoe to helm the hems of the vintage brand.
It seems like a brilliant seaming of Weinstein's familiar film power with his new fashion outing, especially since the Halston show is one of February's most anticipated runways - okay, really it's one of the most anticipated front rows, with Weinstein acolytes likes Anne Hathaway and Gwyneth Paltrow expected to raid the nascent Halston sample closet for outfits.
If Jude Law seals his movie role before then, he'd probably be expected to attend, too - but would that prevent another Weinstein-friendly starlet, Sienna Miller, from also arriving on the scene?
