Denim: Classic or Trendy?

Jan 07, 2008 @ 3:04pm

stellajeans.jpgThis weekend, at the nameless downtown boutique where I slave a couple days a week, I was bombarded with the question, "Are skinny jeans over?"

Our trend-obsessed buyers might have gone overboard on the wideleg trend, and they might have forgotten which season we're in. More than one confused shopper wondered how they were supposed to tuck the massive flares into their winter boots.

I understand their frustration - while I treasure my high-waisted widelegs, and rocked them with massive platforms all summer/fall, I've found them impossible to transition into winter since I detest boots under jeans.

When skinny jeans hit the states, shoppers groaned that they were too unflattering to have any real staying power. But their versatility has made them more than a passing trend, leaving a gap in the market for novelty denim ideas.

Meanwhile, plenty of women seem to stick to the one style they feel works for them, buying multiple pairs of what looks and feels perfect instead of jumping onto the current denim bandwagon. It's not exactly the most exciting shopping method, but maybe looking good does sometimes trump looking "on trend".

Are you still wearing your skinnies? Or have you fully embraced the trendiest denim out there?

i don't understand why you can't wear all types of jeans in the same season.

i still wear skinnies and sometimes swear by them. but i also wear flared, boyfriend, and the oh-so-boring bootcut. (i wear highwaisted pants to work - not denim) why can't you alternate? because i don't plan to give up my hair waisted pants anytime soon and my skinnies ill wear forever!

Wideleg forever. Much better proportions for me. And winter is not an issue where I'm at, so know boots + jeans problems.

as long as i am preoccupied with equestrian boots, i will continue to wear skinny jeans.

jeans are such a personal thing--shouldn't people be more concerned with fit than trends?

I'm a tall size 12 (comparatively small waist to very wide hips). When I wear jeans, trouser cuts provide the most flattering fit by far to me.

i agree with olyaiscool, why wouldn't I alternate? Just because I wear a miniskirt one day doesn't mean I can't wear a pencil skirt to the knee the next, so why would it be different with jeans?

Oo I still wear my skinnies! They fit me the best out of any jeans I've had, and I plan on staying with them as long as I feel good in them. I just figured if skinny jeans are ever completely ruled "out," then I'll stick to my method of cuffing them at the bottom to balance out the shape and give them a more Audrey Hepburn feel.

i just bought another skinny jean today. i like the way it looks good on me. i have wide leg, skinny, etc all styles. i don't spend too much money on jeans and when i am following styles i dont go overboard. i know high waist doesnt look good on me. so i have an awesome wide leg i bought a couple seasons ago which has a regular/low waist (while buying i told my friend, i know wide legs arent so trendy but this jeans look awesome and bought it)
its about not looking like a clown following trends with no sense of style

I love my Del Forte high-waisted, very flared jeans--but it's true, you just can't wear them over cold-weather footwear, much less tuck them in. And it's a waste wearing baggy sweaters etc over them, since the waist band is so flattering and detailed.

Actually, my favourite jeans for day-to-day wear are my Acne jeans "Hug" style, which they describe as "anti-fit"--skinny, but not "vagina-crunching", to use the Fug girls' evocative phrase. (Sorry.)

I'm with Kimmi on this one -- even though I LOVED those high waisted Del Fortes, I'm so tiny they looked like they were eating me. Sigh. I'd probably follow more fads if I had an easier body type, but for me, it's all about what looks good (which mean yeah, I'm on the skinnies in boots bandwagon.)

I'm absolutely in love with my skinnies. However, do like to keep up with trends. I found a pair of wide-leg jeans that fit me perfectly this summer (at F21!) but for some dumb reason I thought I wouldn't wear them so I didn't buy. If skinnies go out, I'll be very angry because they are simply the most flattering jeans on me, as I have narrow hips and flares sometimes look weird on me. Also, they're kind of my signature.

I'm tiny and I'd never had jeans fit me like skinny jeans. I can't do high waisted or wide-leg, they swallow me. I sometimes bring out the old gap bootcut but not too often anymore. Long live skinny jeans!

I am definitely still rocking my skinnies tucked into boots, but just like socialitedreams said above, why not alternate? I've got my slouchy bf jeans, straight leg black jeans, and casual flares all in rotation.

Good god do I love skinny jeans. They flatter my shape, making me look somehow thin and curvy at the same time! Also my undying love of punk rock (and punk boys!) certainly helps. Skinnies forever!

I love my new straight leg jeans. They are the most flattering jeans I've had in a long time. I'm not picky about style though. If I find a pair of jeans that actually fit me AND look good, they are coming home with me. I would like some skinny jeans to wear with my boots though.

If skinny jeans are your thing, then wear skinny jeans. If you're into wide legs, go for it. For denim, you should wear whatever fits your personal style best or else you'll look like a fashion victim. Personally, I love skinnies and I'm not parting with mine, though I spend most of my days in dresses/skirts and opaques.

i think skinnies are still in but by next fall they will be fading quickly. it's just the way the fashion cycle works. it's been at least a few years that the skinny has been in. i think i've gotten my money's worth by now. by spring, i will store them away and pull out all my 80's palazzo pants.

If I could find flares that didn't look totally nineties on me, I would wear them. Same with bootcut and straight leg.
Wide leg jeans make me look about a foot tall seeing as I'm only 5'3" so I stay away from them.

A dark wash skinny jean is the only kind of jean I wear....

I've just abandoned denim altogether for now. Skinny jeans feel dated, it's hard to find a good, non-dowdy pair of straight-legs or [shudder] bootcuts, and wide-leg denim never quite escapes the That 70s Show/Camden nu-metal connotations for me. I'm taking this as a spur to explore the other trouser-shaped options out there. I'm wearing mens' cut black cotton/wool, and very wide legged and high waisted, 1930s-cut drill cotton in indigo and gray. Both are as versatile as jeans but feel far more chic.

skinny jeans are pretty much the only jeans i wear. they are't unflattering on me and the silouette works well with the majority of my clothing.i bought a pair of wide leg jeans for fall but i felt kind of silly in them.

Snow, slush, salt... there's no way I'm going out in anything other than boots and skinnies right now! I honestly could care less, I'm not about to drop a couple hundred dollars on a new pair of wide legs only to destroy them -- along with my shoes -- in these conditions. In fact, I have a pair and I wore them a lot this summer. But, almost like Uggs (which I detest but simply cannot deny the practicality of, especially when Toronto streets destroy and mangle your boots every year), I think some exceptions can be made. If you're walking 3 ft from your limo to your office every morning that's fine, but for those of us trudging through city streets I don't care what anyone says about skinnies and boots.

and for winter, you can wear socks with platform loafers under your high wasted jeans

wear what looks best on you and with your wardrobe.
i just hate it when people cant proportion themselves correctly. my boobs are big and im a but hippy so if i am wearing a wider cut leg (never hight waisted. they make me look pregnant) i stick to a tighter shirt so i dont frump myself. and if i have on a tighter bottom ill go for more volume on top.
dont wear a trend it it looks bad on you. please.

Skinny jeans are the best. They come in tall and short which for some reason i can find more pants in skinny than anything else. They'll always be in my closet.

I think a girl with a good, well proportioned shape can wear a wide range of jeans. Isn't the point of having a denim wardrobe that you have several options that suit the look you are going for that day. Let us remember that skinny jeans aren't newly invented. Models have been wearing stovepipes for years. Cigarette length will always be chic. Skinny jeans are a much neater option if you are trying to dress up your denim. Boot cut isn't a cureall. I personally think that it looks very 1999 when people try to dress up a bootcut jean (no reference to Prince). As long as you choose your denim to fit with the overall aesthetic you are trying to convey per outfit, then you should always look stylish.

i find wide-leg jeans vomitrocious, even on the queen (kate moss, duh). and flares remind me of high school and not in a good way. i just haven't found the way to wear them without feeling like a corny 17-year old. i still rock the skinnies, especially in winter. and probably will this summer, too.

Why cant you alternate denim styles. Some shirts dont look as flattering with wide leg jeans and some shoes dont either. I love my skinnies for everyday especially because they show off my fabulous shoes. Wide legs are fun too but dont try looking for a boyfriend in them. Most guys dont get it

Haven't they been trying to kill skinnies for a while now? I would think leggings would die first, and sadly, those seem to be hanging on. I'm just glad to have tights with feet back. My legs should never be bisected mid-calf like that.

I will never stop wearing my skinny jeans. They make everything look better; even boring tee shirts look more interesting when paired with black skinny/slim fit jeans. I don't remember what magazine it was, either Vogue or Bazaar, that said that skinny jeans will never go out of style, even if they stop being "trendy" because they are just a style choice.
