Pat Field Gets Carried Away

Jan 07, 2008 @ 2:24pm

lucyliu.jpgThere were more than a few kinks in Cashmere Mafia's premiere last night.

We wonder how four women manage to conduct their dazzling lives within a two block radius. We wonder how young, impressionable viewers are supposed to react to the message that it's better to let one's husband cheat so that one has a permanent party buddy.

But we're mostly wondering about Lucy Liu's wardrobe. We actually laughed out loud almost every time she popped up on screen. From the heavily shoulder-padded floral dress she wore to the office, to the outrageous amount of plaid she rocked on a golfing trip - Pat Field went too far.

We know Liu's character, Mia, is supposed to be the Carrie Bradshaw of this new bunch, draped in vintage and one-of-a-kind ensembles. But this time around, the crazy outfits are just too much to swallow.

Maybe we were more willing to accept Carrie's eccentric outfits because SJP wore weird clothes pre-SATC, or maybe because Carrie was supposed to be a freelance writer (as in, someone without an office to dress for everyday), instead of the high profile publisher that Mia is supposed to be.

Whatever the reason, Liu looks thoroughly uncomfortable in the clothes Field picked, making her not at all fun to watch. And isn't that the point of an over-the-top wardrobe in the first place?

for some reason, I like that outfit in the picture...i've never watched the show, so I don't know, but yeah, if she looks uncomfortable in the clothes then it definitely isn't working

I could see the jacket in some incarnation, but those shorts are really pushing it, and the socks are just beyond the pale.

i think Pat is definintly reaching...I was just a ghast at some of the things she was wearing..it didn't seem "naturl"
Pat maybe trying to fill the void everyone has from SATC being gone!

@ Socialitedreams..the show just aired last night for the first time...

I think Patricia Fields is just trying to outdo herself because she created great ensembles for the cast of Sex and the City. Honestly, from the screenshots that i saw from the SATC movie, I think she started going downhill from there and this new show is just dragging her down even more.

I agree, the jacket actually works, whereas the wide shorts and tall, black socks push it to nerdy.

TO be fair, in that scene, the Mia character is supposed to be going golfing...

But still, that's a whole lotta outfit! I would have to say that I think Pat is kind of off the mark with this show-- the characters seems like they would barely have time to step into Barneys AND then try to accessorize all of those outfits... they seemed hella busy!

I really dont like the way these new SATC type shows portray women. But yes, much too far, Pat Field.

No publisher that I have EVER worked for would have rocked any of those outfits. Clients would never take them seriously. Not to mention most female publishers are over the age of 40, and keep it classic with one trendy piece.

i thought the outfits were cute for the most part- especially mia's metallic black dress was gorgeous. my major gripe was the booooooooo-ring dresses for the last awards ceremony, the dowdiest, snooze inducing black dresses ever! even the supposedly "brave" red dress looked like something from talbots

Ok, I think all this criticism of fashion on Cashmere has gone a bit overboard - a lot of people seem to want to jump on the bandwagon. Yeah ok, the plaid was to plaid but there have been some realy knockout outfits on the show as well.

It's important to note that fashion is changing very fast, faster than people have time to get accustomed to it, hence the criticism. Outfits with belts and jackets of all sizes have been all the rage and there are quite a few decent ones on the show. They might not appeal to everyone, but they are definitely what is fashionable at the moment.

Personally, I like a lot of what Lucy Liu wears. I'd never be able to wear a bright floral skirt (ep 1) at the office, but a shockingly floral shirt with a black skirt? I would definitely consider it. Most of all though, I've completely fallen in love with the white billowy-sleeved shirt with the black torso and the high collar. I think it's absolutely gorgeous and I'm going to have something similar made for me.

Ms. Fashionistas,

Sex and the City was an eclipse. The lackluster reception of Cashmere Mafia illustrates that eclipses cannot be manufactured. Fashion emulation would seem more straight forward. Surely Patricia Field can maintain her stellar design selections. Why has this not been the case with cashmere mafia?

While most of Mia Mason's costumes look overarching and forced, I spotted a photo of her character in the March issue of Instyle. She's holding a steel blue, tassled clutch that is chic heaven. It's Jack Rabbit label, it's classic Sex and the City recall and soon it will be mine.
