Would You Wear a Vest - and Nothing Else?

Jan 28, 2008 @ 2:29pm

kate hudson in vest.jpgWe set out to find the perfect etched mirror for our new apartment this weekend, but ended up trying on the new Rag & Bone collection instead.

Their tailored white tuxedo vest, with ivory trim and a halter neck, was a painfully tempting purchase.

The salesperson pointed out that it's the one Kate Bosworth wears in this month's Vogue - then he claimed it looks better without a shirt underneath.

"It's so hot!" he squealed.

We sent a skinny friend into the dressing room even though we were sure it'd look awful, but he was right, it actually looked kind of "hot."

Kate Hudson might be the only one who can pull off the look with ripped low-rise jeans, and even she's a stretch. But maybe it could work with something high waisted, or looser fitting?

There's a part of us that knows this look really depends on the girl rocking it, and that at the end of the day, there's something, well, cheap about it. But then again, we tend to always associate traditionally "hot" with cheap anyway.

Would you wear just a vest on top? Or is this trend pushing sexy menswear too far?

You need to desexify it a bit. Maybe put it with some gorgeous charcoal high-waisted trousers or a swingy skirt rather than ripped up jeans. That way it's a bit wild without being Trailer Park Barbie...

I have a picture of Kate Moss wearing a vest and shorts combo and she looked really good and not cheap at all. But then again she is Kate Moss. I would definitely try it with maybe a cardigan?

It's no different than a halter top with some buttons thrown in.

I would try it, but would probably cave last minute and pair it with a tank top of some sort...

I used to do it all the time in college. It was my go to dressy casual party outfit. Black vest, black pants and contrasting accessories.

No thanks! This and the "would you wear a corset" post are... very... oooof.

i agree with purly. if your vest is like kate's in that picture, you're not showing any more skin than you would be in a regular camisole or halter. in fact, i bet a vest is even more supportive since they're usually lined or made of thicker material. it's also more coverage than something strapless, so i don't really see anything wrong with it unless it's ridiculously low cut.

I loved this look on Kate Hudson. I wonder, though, how it would look from the back. Too much like a cocktail waitress at a smutty men's club? I liked @guest 2:47's idea of pairing it with a swingy skirt to make it more feminine. I don't like vests with super tailored pants, though. That just screams: "I am wearing the Men's Wear Look."

i think it's totally acceptable. it's not a trashy look to begin with, who really associates a vest with being cheap anyway? Second, when vests first started making their comeback, they were seen on runways without shirts underneath (ex:H&M's Barococo look). However, as with all pieces, it really depends on the wearer and what they're wearing to complement the vest that really decides if it's ultimately trashy or not.

My mom rocked that look in the 70s, tuxedo pants and all. A couple of seasons ago, I was jonesing for it pretty bad; now, though, the idea idea is not quite as appealing. With jeans, though, it's quite sleazy.

i think this is definitely do-able...but it looks cheap on Kate. it needs something less beachy and a little more sophisticated.

I certainly would!

Think it looks sexy but not pushing it, like with wearing a corset. And its nothing new,i have seen people like Victoria Beckham and Kate Moss rocking them for years now.

Of coruse its not for every woman.

I've done it as part of a Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli in Cabaret) costume, but I'm not sure I would go for it as streetwear.

It can look sexy in an edgy way or tacky... like most things it depends on how you wear it. Not high waisted pants though - the bottom of the vest would interfere with the lines of the pants. But how bout with dark /formal looking wide leg/boyfriend jeans?

Why do you worry about looking trashy? You're not 50 years old.

Hah, anyone ever notice, Sheryl Crow does it all the time . . . not exactly someone I'm taking fashion cues from. Just a thought, I wouldn't do it, but I think she pulls it off, and Kate especially.
