Would You Wear

Would You Wear Fake Glasses?

Chloe in glasses.jpgAs WWD reported yesterday, there have been a lot of celebrities spotted in glasses as of late.

The first to really set things off was Cate Blanchett, who was photographed wearing thick black frames out to the theatre. Then, we saw Helena Christensen and Daisy Lowe sporting their own pairs, and when we spotted a bespectacled Chloe Sevigny, we knew this was officially a trend.

But how come we’ve never seen any of these ladies in glasses before? Did everyone just decide to ditch the contact lenses all in the same month? We think this could be true for some of them. But we think we’re on to the others’ secret: fake glasses.

We’ve actually known people who wear fake glasses on a daily basis. They say specs make them look smarter, kind of like when we wear wedges under long pants to look taller, or highlights to appear blonde.

We guess this could be just another accessory like any other. But there’s something about their false use that comes off as, dare we say it, poser-ish?

Would you wear fake glasses? And, more importantly, would you cop to it if anyone asked you if they were fake?

I blame it on Jackson.

But I like glasses, fake or real. I think it's style. That's all.

As a wearer of glasses for many years and now i only need them sometimes, I wear them sometimes for the look. even though mine have an Rx in them. So I totally understand it. They want to rock the nerd chic trend even if they don't need glasses. It's just another accessory, like a pair of earrings or necklace.

NEVAH! Wore coke bottle lenses until I was 35, and had eye surgery. Now I sometime have to opt for magnifiers, but fake glasses? No!

when i graduated college i had a sales job that dealt with a lot of up-top executives. looking like a little girl i had to get some 'appearance power' so i got a pair of nice gucci glasses and filled them with no-prescription glass. it was basically a prop. when a client would say something i would touch the right arm of the glass and look up saying 'hmm'. very convincing haha.

now the few times i wear them i become them in a way that is more smart, timid, nerdy. i guess that's my 'glass character'.

That's such a dangerous road to tread! They might be able to make you look smarter, but if you get caught wearing fake glasses you're going to look really, really dumb.

I actually do wear glasses every day - there aren't good contacts for my prescription.

So I say to the celebs, wear away! I'll be ahead of the trend for a change. I would also love to see more fashionable options when I go to buy my next pair.

As someone who HAS to wear glasses and LOVES TO DO SO..i don't really like when people want to try on my specs and walk around all dy like they need them. when they actually do need them, they don't want to wear them! However, it does get kinda annoying when u have a nice outfit on and u have those damn glasses on ::laughing::

wear them! better to rock fake glasses then fake rack....

i used to wear ray ban wayfayers frames with clear rx lens, and liked them because they were sort of unexpected. but with the recent wayfayer saturation i came back to school this fall and at least 3 girls had gotten them. so i found myself some vintage round horn rimmed frames. big frames are everywhere these days i guess.

Hmmm. If you think logically about it, it IS kind of dumb to want to wear fake glasses... It's like wearing fake crutches. But then again, I have to admit, they do give a person a certain nerdy chic vibe, it's kind of cool. I think I'll leave the eyeglasses for those who actually NEED them though, I would still feel like an idiot if someone actually asks if I've always worn glasses...

a friend sometimes pulled out the fake glasses, and although she looked fairly good and totally admitted their faux-ness, I kept thinking "argh, what a tool". This may be because I have actual, useful glasses that I wear when I need to see things.

I think nerdiness might be one of those things that is only chic if it is fake.

Fake glasses and an ironic Super Mario Bros. T-shirt might be stylin', but there's little love for girls who need their glasses and have ancient game systems in their apartments. Le sigh.

i like the look of the vintage/eighties/gold-or-black rimmed/big eyeglasses. its like wearing the sunglasses, but indoors and without anyone making fun (unless you have a problem telling people that you like the trend and not the purpose of fake eyeglasses).

i have a guy friend who wears the most adorable vintage eyeglasses. granted, he needs them to see. but every time i steal them off his head and look in the mirror, they look so cute on i can't resist the urge to go on ebay and find some like them!

Amy Sedaris has been wearing fake glasses recently(ish). At least, she says they're fake. At the Quill Awards she put them on when she got to the podium to read her acceptance speech, which is totally something she'd do even if they are fake.

I think they can be cute. I don't know if I'd ever bother with them, though.

regarding the comment about fake glasses being like fake crutches... when i was a pre-teen i really wanted braces SOooo BAD but didn't need them. i just really wanted those cool colored rubberbands in them - and plus, everyone had braces.

of course, i'm glad i never actually got them but it was just the novelty of them that i wanted.

I have and do wear fake glasses sometimes! Occasionally, it's because I'm adopting somewhat of a persona and I feel they compliment my outfit... Or I'll wear them because I feel they balance my face out because of their shape, and I'm feeling particularly "unbalanced" that day.

I wear reading glasses, anyway, but I totally tell people that they're fake! No regrets. ;)

Absolutely! I'm 26 and had Lasik years ago, but I'm finishing up my MBA and when I go back to work I'll be dealing with senior execs WAY older than me. I'm all for anything (i.e. glasses) that keeps the focus on my work and distracts people from my age. Plus, there's this cute Chanel pair I've been pining for ...

I think it's awesome that fake glasses are in -- I'd feel kind of silly wearing them, but if it makes it "OK" for girls who need glasses to wear them, I'm all for it! I have horrible vision and need a break from my contacts, and I've been dying to get some nice designer frames. I don't think that glasses look particularly good on me (some girls look so good in them), but my eyes actually need them and I've loved the look since I saw the video for "Stay" with Lisa Loeb. Those cat-eye frames! Still love them. I saw these awesome bright red thick D&G frames at Lenscrafters but I don't think I have the guts to wear them.

I've always wanted glasses, since Freshmen year I've been randomly stealing my mothers cute pair of magnifying reading glasses. I think the obsession started with I Love the 90's & Lisa Loeb, and also alot of the girls that were older and in the local music scene that I was just getting into wore them - they were so scene back then and I just wanted to be accepted by that group so badly - thank goodness I've outgrown that phase, it was full of baby cute plastic hair clips, any band tshirts I could get my hands on, bright mismatched colors, and pins from bands - oh it was horrible! Back to glasses though, a cute pair recently popped up on the Urban Outfitter's website and I had to have them. I love them to death, my friends from the college art program I took this summer in the city think they're cute, but, my friends here at home in suburbia HATE them. They make fun of me endlessly saying "You don't need glasses why are you wearing those! TAKE THEM OFF. Don't wish it upon yourself. You look like a dork. I hate my glasses that's why I wear contacts." They can't seem to find the fashion statement in them. Opinions please? http://photos-d.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v158/118/39/504452465/n504452465_482363_1150.jpg

I don't have a problem with fake glasses, but you'll look pretty dumb if you get caught wearing them. I have horrible vision but I normally wear contacts. Occasionally i'll give my eyes a break and wear my bright red glasses, especially if i'm feeling retro that day.

If you can see clearly without glasses or contacts and you want to wear fake glasses, just remember how lucky you are to have good vision.

I’m 24 years old and have worn glasses since I was 14. I have horrible vision and really dislike wearing glasses. I only wear contacts when I go out at night because they irritate my eyes and I get very bad headaches, so it's frames for me 90% of the time as I don’t have choice.

Without my glasses I am rendered disabled and feel almost insulted by people who wear fake glasses for fashion!

First, I have to call bullshit on whoever said nerdiness is only chic when it's fake. Just because you're a nred who wears glasses doesn't mean you can't be stylish.

But wearing fake glasses is just so pathetic.

I wouldn't because I need to wear glasses on a regular basis since one of my eyes is near sighted and one is far sighted. To top it all off I only wear one of three pairs if it looks good with my outfit. Some people say I look smart and sexy with my glasses on but I just don't like wearing them all the time.

I hate it when people who don't need to wear glasses do. It gets me just as angry as seeing a LV logo pattern bag, grr!
I wear glasses because I'm practically blind. While we're on the subject of glasses, the other thing that gets me, is pretty much the same thing as the LV logo bags, when purchasing my new frames I was faced with the dilemma of finding frames that didn't shout the PRADA logo or scream CHANEL with rhinestone logos on the arm of the frame. Half the reason I purchased the merlot colored Burberry frames, was because the name is barely there, oh and to see. Do designers forget glasses go on your face?

I've worn either glasses or contacts since age 9. I mostly wear contacts now--they don't fog or get splotchy in the rain, and i can wear sunglasses in the summer--but I still often wear my frames because I love them. I think this makes me biased towards people who wear fakes; it sort of pisses me off, like if they have good eyes they should be happy suck it up and go frameless.

I really, REALLY hate people who wear them without the damn lens though. That's really stupid.

The people who wear fake specs as a fashion statement are probably the same ones who picked on those of us who had to wear them for vision when we were young.
Enjoy them as a fashion statement while you can, the time will come when you'll have to wear them daily and nerdy won't seem as chic.

I think that wearing fake glasses has now became another accessory for girls and men to wear as an added touch to their daily outfits. Its just a look, kinda sexy and fun. I want to wear some glasses, but without a prescription lense in them so that I don't affect my eyes. Any one out there know an online site to find such glasses? if so e-mail me the sites please @ Camila_Vanilla@hotmail.com
Thanks!

As someone who can't see the top line of the eye chart without glasses or contacts, I wish that those of you out there who don't need glasses never will. But I have learned to develop a positive attitude about being myopic (nearsighted).

Today's glasses are lightweight and comfortable. And there is something to looking intelligent. Also, with 1/3 of the population being myopic, chances are pretty high that any future mates will also be myopic, so you aren't the only one who has to wear something on their face all the time in order to see clearly.

Because I can live with being an average-looking person in glasses, as well as being able to wear contacts (but for less than 50% of my waking hours), right now I am not eager for LASIK. That may change in the future, but I'll deal with that when the time comes.

hi I'm a glasses wearer and wouldn't swop them for contacts or eye surgery in a million years - they're such a cool way to accentuate your face and eyes... I work for a company that sells over the counter glasses including the fake ones and its big business, people LOVE them!

I'm so lucky because now I literally have dozens of pairs!

So much better now than the days of wearing really awful frames and being called '4-eyes'!
