Adventures in Copyrights: Flower Children

flower marc.jpg We loved Marc Jacobs' flowered swing dress from the Fall '07 collection, but so did every other girl:

It was one of the first pieces to sell out of boutiques, despite it's $400 price tag (which ultimately is what made us cancel our craving - well, that and we saw it on this girl during September Fashion Week and we were like... whatever, anyway).

It seems London shoppers haven't recovered from the dress either, because (American) reader Jasmine hit us up on Facebook to show us her discovery:

ASOS, the British online retailer whose name stands for As Seen on Stars, has totally knocked it off. For 60 pounds - about $120 - you can get the same pattern as the Marc by Marc frock, but with a cheesy bet, a sloppy hemline, and a neckline lower than Forever 21's labor standards.

Of course, $120 can also buy you a real Marc by Marc piece onsale at Net-a-Porter... or even two or three Marc by Marc pieces, if you can shove your way into the Barneys Warehouse Sale.

Still love the original. I saw it two weeks ago on a short M by MJ shopgirl, and I liked it even better on her than on the runway. It moves beautifully, and she was seriously rocking it.

That textile company must be making a mint.

ASOS is ripping-off the Rolling Stones, as well, with their "Burning Rocks" t-shirt..... http://www.asos.com/Kate-Moss/Asos/Burning-Rocks-Baseball-Tee/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=266597&cid=2623&clr=White&sh=0

unless marc designed the fabric himself, or has some sort of agreement with the fabric company, i don't understand how this is copyright infringement if ASOS bought the same pattern at the fabric retailers.
