"Art, film and music have nothing to do with fashion asides from fashion, by necessity, having to associate itself with other art forms because it is in itself vapid and cannot stand alone." - Julian Schnabel in Dazed and Confused.

He has a point. He also has horrible style.

What does he know. That was an obnoxious comment on his part.

tim gunn said something similar last week on john stewart - not as harsh though. something along the lines of "let's be honest, nobody really needs fashion"

It is not a matter of "needing fashion," but to call the draping and construction of some of the most interesting garments as "vapid," well, Julian has a lot to learn. I think that all of his accolades have gone to his head.

Isn't Julian Schnabel Zac Posen's godfather? Funny.

Yeah. He should have said "soulless".

Dude wears his pj's everywhere so I'm not sure how he is any sort of authority on what fashion is.

He also directed a movie about a fashion editor...

his refusal to participate in fashion doesn't discredit his disparaging opinion of it... rather it proves how someone with absolute disregard for the fashion world can succeed in so many other, supposedly interdependent forms of art. I think he's a stupid man but his point is valid.

I've seen him interviewed and he seems to be as shallow and vapid as he claims the fashion world is. Everything about him is so plotted and planned to create this "artist" image. I think that this statement is part of it.

We dont need art then. Who needs a painting on the wall, especially by him?
Blah...It makes no difference to me that he made a movie about a fashion editor. That doesn't mean that he is the authority. He needs to go work in an atelier and then make an informed comment.

i think his comment is funny...
probably because i think 'le scaphandre et le papillion' was a masterpiece. he's earned it.

well, excuse me! I live and breathe fashion, and, sure, he has a point. but only because fashion depends on people top wear it, and only relies on these other art forms because some of the woreld's most influential people are in music, art, etc.

how is this site and many others that are strictly about fashion coverage so successful then? and while art, film, and music may be important and a means of self-expression, so is fashion. i find that fashion is one of the easiest ways to continuously renovate and change oneself and show the world that "this is me".
and besides, even though fashion takes inspiration from music, art, and film so do the others. wasn't there a movie recently released based all around beatles songs? didn't andy warhol make paintings of marilyn monroe, a star in the film industry?
everything is interlinked, in my opinion.

to those who agree with this asinine quote - why read this website and take time out of your life to comment and perpetuate the discussion?

All of the guests commenting on his "lack of fashion" are only proving his point.

I think he is making a comment about how some fashion designers/people are always referencing how they are influenced by other art forms.

I also 100% agree with him. Fashion is a shallow, materialistic, image-based business but it is a business. Anything that is based on those thing is going to be shallow, of course. I think M. Schnabel realizes this, and so do most of the better up-and-coming designers out there...

That exact sentiment has probably been expressed through the ages, about art (in all of its forms, of which yes, fashion is one), industry, science, etc- and it is just as irrelevant every time.

Should we stop growing flowers because they are vapid and don't 'do anything'? Should we stop writing poems (or creating blogs) because all of the good ones have already been written?

The world would be a much more depressing place without beauty, and the search for it.
