Barbie Saves the Day

Feb 12, 2008 @ 2:43pm

barbie.jpgIt's cold, we're exhausted and getting sick.

But then our FedEx guy arrived with Barbie iDesign, and all was good again.

The case bragged: "Be Your Own Stylist!", "Dress Barbie Like You've Always Wanted!" Visions of retro Barbie in a white ruched bathing suit with vintage shades danced in our head.

But once we reached the design room, where Barbie stands on a pedestal while you swipe clothing cards to dress her, we came to the harsh realization that at some point in the last fifteen years, Barbie started turning tricks.

Our clothing options were cropped tops, laced biker jackets, embroidered jeans and pink platform shoes. We could even dress Barbie in a pleather mini dress and have a miniature dalmation nipping at her heels.

The few times we've dreamed of being a stylist, we've envisioned racks packed with Proenza Schouler, Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood. But Barbie looks thrilled with her choices.

At left, the most conservative outfit we could find.

That's so disappointing.
But also expected.
It would be so cool if you could dress up a vintage Barbie with the cat eye glasses and halter 1 pieces and such!

Ooh. I remember there was this pink gown that barbie had that looked like Glenda the good witch on wizard of oz. I remember thinking that when I was older I would own a gown that looked just like that dress... I still think about it every time I watch Wizard of Oz! :)

That's sad. Although I'm happy to see Barbie went brunette.

I had this game for Microsoft Windows '95 when i was 8.
It was fantastic, but also a lot less call-girly and a lot more 80's.

You guys are so serious. It was probably a promo freebie.

Right?

If not, fashionista still rocks.

When I was in elementary school circa 96-98, I had this awesome Barbie game that allowed for you to design you're own patterns and colors - to a point - with special fabric printer paper that you would print on then fold, and use special adhesive on to dress your Barbies. Oh how I loved that game!

I just googled it out of curiosity:

I had the 90s version too! It was amazing and I'd spend hours making clothes.

Check out stardoll.com. Everything you could ever want as far as electronic paper dolls-- even a "50s doll" with all the vintage clothes you wish you actually had.

I have two daughters, 6 and 8, and they spend hours on this site. I cannot bear the thought of them playing (and molding their fledgling fashion sensibilities) on tripe like Barbie.com and Brats.

Barbie does still have vintage dolls in production (and we have most of them) and the beautiful (OTT) princess dolls, so all is not lost. But this whole "we have to compete with Bratz" mentality... it's horribly disappointing.

Barbie-- reclaim your place in fashion!
