Desperately Seeking Vivienne Westwood

So yesterday's Vivienne Westwood show was lots of fun, but the first thing we thought was Desperately Seeking Susan.

Then today in the office, our friend Amanda remarked, "These clothes are all amazing, but I can't help but think I could go to Urban Outfitters or TopShop or even Barney's Coop and Forever 21, buy a ton of them, and mix them all up to look just like this stuff."

But that's the thing -

Without Vivienne Westwood, the shape and the attitude wouldn't necessarily exist in all those other mass market clothes.

Also:

It's a little sublime to send a girl with a protest sign down the runway, and have it be for political causes instead of fur, don't you think?

Hopefully it'll make the Peta kids planning to crash Milan and Paris realize what the really dire problems are in the world (though admittedly, we'd rather wear a Vivienne Westwood wool jacket than anything fur, anytime).

The protest sign left a bad taste in my mouth. not the place or time, imo. camel toes plus Guantanamo - yeah that goes together.

Because there's a time and a place when it comes to showcasing your convictions? I'd think that if it's the time and place to showcase your work, it's more than adequate for your convictions as well. In any case, it's Vivienne fucking Westwood, that's what she's always been about. Had she forgone her usual various causes, I would've been terribly disappointed as it would've demonstrated a sign that she's given up.

What are the problems that are more dire in your opinion? I guess killing innocent creatures to satisfy some selfish desire for a totally forgettable jacket that will eventually end up in the back of your closet isn't dire enough. Hopefully someone can skin you and wear you.
