Fashion Is Fun

How Much Will You Spend on a T-shirt?

alexanderwangt.jpgWe’re repeatedly told it’s best to splurge on a pair of luxury shoes or an it-bag - but in our office, some would rather spend serious money searching for the perfect white tee.

While a nice bag can last a lifetime, a white tee will never last more than a year, (you might still have it in your closet, but there’s no way it looks good). However, the satisfaction of finding the best-fitting, softest, most flattering t-shirt to be the blank canvas for everything else in your closet is enough to validate its short life span.

Britt guesses she has about twenty white t-shirts ranging from $7 Hanes undershirts to a $100 James Perse linen tee, (the most she’s ever spent). But then again that’s pretty much all she wears, whether with a brocade skirt or ripped jeans. She’s currently lusting after this Alexander Wang version, and would like you to justify the $138 purchase.

Natalie is in the same boat (shoe…ha!), although she usually just stocks up at American Apparel (still overpriced remembering the price of those Hanes.) She’s bought a few James Perse items in her past, but she doesn’t feel so bad about it, because she knows that you’re not just paying for cotton, you’re paying for the perfect fit and the ability to practically triple your wardrobe via strategic layering and other slights of fashion.

When it comes down to it, buying a $100 t-shirt might be as ridiculous as buying a $5,000 handbag, except it’s more within reach, it’ll actually be on your body rather than just to the side, and it’s less of a commitment.

Which makes it OK, right?

i swear by petit bateau tees...they always look polished, wash well, are long enough in the torso, and the colors are not too loud or boring.

The question is, what makes the plain white tee worth $100?? If I am just paying for the name, forget it!! I will go down to Target and pay 10 bucks for a 3-pack of white tee's. I'd rather spend the money I saved on something else.

I have been known to wear a white tee almost every day, but even for as much as I wear them, I can't justify spending more than $8.99. They just don't last, no matter how much you pay. The difference between that and a killer bag, is that the bag is an investment.

That, and I have gotten so many compliments on the basic hanes v-neck! Love them!!!

britt and I must be soul- (or sole? haha) mates because I too LIVE in white t-shirts. always v-neck. Banana Republic/Gap/Old Navy, because I get an employee discount.

but it sounds like I'll have to look for those Hanes... I just have no idea where to find them in Montreal :(

Well one thing you pay more for is the quality of cotton (like supima cotton, for example), the style fit and cut of the shirt, and for where and how the shirt was manufactured (like in the U.S. instead of China). But $100 is a bit much so I'd say you're paying about $60 for the name... ;)

I bought a $100 James Perse once and returned it after one wear because it got a hole in it within about, oh, 10 seconds. "Nice" cotton, maybe, but paper thin too. Which reminds me -- aren't Alexander Wang tees designed to get holes starting on the first wash? Like, intentionally? It doesn't bother me so much now but still, after you drop such a huge sum on something which, really, American Apparel still does pretty well, it kind of makes you annoyed to watch it fall apart in front of your eyes.

That said, I get the draw. If I could have a Lisa-Simpson-esque wardrobe with five million of the same thing in it, I'd probably fill it up with James Perse and Alexander Wang.

There really is nothing better than the Hanes v-neck. Great fit and quality for the price. Grab a five pack for ten bucks, wear 'em out and then replace in a month or so.

While I do have a plethora of Hanes white tees, I usually reserve them for sleeping in or the weekends, because they're a little too thick for me, and the neck (always V) is a little too high. I'm in search of the perfect low V (a la MKA's 'The Row' tees for $300.. thats a joke right?) that won't break the bank. I recently purchased the American Apparel ones, but they stretch out so easily! It's really hard to find the perfect white tees! Gap is pretty nice, and their cotton is really soft.

I would go for the Alexander Wang tee because you're not paying for the t-shirt, you're paying for the fit and style in that case.

When it comes down to it, the plain white tee shirt may as well be a Hanes.
However, tanks are another story... For some reason, the only brand that has EVER fit my body properly, without looking trashy or frumpy, is James Perse. I basically live in them. However, after a year, they do lose their shape, which is quite sad after spending more than $50 on a little cotton tank top.

LnA tees are amazing - thin enough and well cut. But they run around $60...expensive for a tee shirt but cheaper than wang. (i live in white tees)

Here's the thing: white tees get sweat staines. I have some cheap ones and some not cheap ones but I was just thinking that I have to stop spending a lot on any white shirt because it seems like no matter what, they get yellowed. I don't sweat a lot and wash my clothes carefully, but suddenly I go to wear a favorite, nice, white shirt and it has sweat stains. Does no one else have this problem?

i understand that your paying for the style and fit but as someone who thinks that fast fashion is expensive (ex. i save up all year to buy a couple items from urban outfitters and zara) i cant justify paying much for a plain white t-shirt. but then again, im a broke high school student so maybe ill think different when im old enough to get a job. for now i splurge on american apparel

However great the shape, a white t-shirt ain't gonna stay white forever. I love The Row ones and the Wang ones but I don't have that kind of money. But if I did I wouldn't have a problem spending it on the perfect tee. Just not in white. The Hanes ones as someone else said have too-high Vs and they shrink too.

funny to read this today, cuz i'm wearing a j. crew white long sleeve tissue tee now. it cost $24 and i wear it almost every day, in diff colors. they barely shrink when you wash em, have stayed the same shape by me for months, and fit perfectly. plus sometimes they go on sale for like $8!

uh, I think you mean "sleights of fashion." unless, that is, you're somehow insulting fashion with repeated wearing of cheap t-shirts.

F-21 tees fit me just, right. Long, lean and cheap. They also hold up well for me (I don't put them in the dryer).
