My Foray into Tyra World

Feb 15, 2008 @ 12:43pm

jazzi at casting.JPGWhen I was approached by a CW Casting Director for Tyra's much-debated new show, I wasn't sure what to think. On the one hand, I thought, "This could be my big break! ELLE!" - (Fashionista is now my fourth internship in the fashion world.) On the other hand, I thought, "Ew."

After myriad debates with friends and at the office, I knew I was at least going to try it out when I found myself in the midst of the 21-page application.

But when I arrived at the casting, one for fashionistas handpicked by the CW's casting crew, I was confronted with about 100 girls (and about twenty boys) who could have stepped out of a ShopBop catalog. I got the sense that these were hopeful kids who had never actually worked in the industry, but were cute enough for primetime TV (In fact, it should be noted that when I was approached, although I was assured that it would be more Apprentice than ANTM, I was never asked about any actual experience.)

There was a blue screen, lights, and a camera set up in the middle of a converted hotel banquet room where CW staffers demanded, "Show me your personality! Show us crazy!"

I should have known when the application asked questions like "What character are you most like from The Devil Wears Prada? (Read some application highlights after the jump!)

I snuck out of the room before the camera could find me. I just can't picture ever being a top editor with footage of trashy housemates (and me!) performing timed runs to showrooms in six-inch platforms re-playing on late-night MTV marathons.

And I wasn't the only one - I caught a few other hopefuls leaving early, and I heard the CW is still casting. For a show that's supposed to air this Spring, they're going to have to find some good candidates fast - Trashy or not, I know I'll be watching.

The application was a source of laughter around my office for about two days. I had gotten a press release and was encouraging some of my interns to at least attend the casting. After reading the following question: "When was the last time you hit, punched, kicked or threw something in anger? Please provide details." or "Describe your relationship with your mother," I knew that it is not for anyone one who is hoping for a respected career in fashion. Good choice in not sticking around...your hard work (and 4 internships) will pay off far more than a brief stint in the spotlight.

oh dear. that last question is SO typical of tyra/antm. good for you for deciding it wasn't for you. quel horreur! but i'll probably watch this show too.

Wow. I figured it would be something ridiculous like that, good for you to get out of there, those questions seem more Real World than anything else. Gross.

This is exactly why i don't shop at shopbop anymore. i don't want to look like another amateur fashion sheep, traveling along with the shopbop herd.

Can't stress it enough: smart move! I considered it, too. (Who doesn't want a leg up in this crazy industry?) In the end, I came to the same conclusion.

I think you couldn't have made a better choice. The only winner I can think of from ANTM is Adrienne Curry and that's only because she married a Brady Buncher after another reality show. You seem to far ahead in your career to need anything so flashy to make it to the top. From here on it's just hard work. :)

Honestly, how could anybody maintain their credibility after 'shenanigans' like that?
Good for you for leaving early with your dignity intact!

there was recently an open casting where i lived and i was tempted to go until i saw the age requirements (18-28). apparently if you're over 30, you can't possibly be stylish or interested in fashion.

I was thinking about interning at Elle when I finish my internship at another high end magazine, but that's not going to happen.

A friend of mine works at Full Picture and they are in talks with Brigette from A Fashionista's Diary to be on this show. If she's smart she won't do it.
