Sheer Etiquette

cynthiarowleyAW08.jpgWhat wasn't floral or plaid last week, was most definitely sheer. And actually, sometimes both.

There were transparent blouses at Ruffian, wispy dresses at Cynthia Rowley and Marc Jacobs, lacy gowns at Temperley - we finally have a use for those vintage slips we always buy.

But what about tops? What's the perfect undergarment for a see-through blouse?

We'd love to just wear a bra underneath, though that would require the perfect one for each top. Not to mention the perfect body to show off.

And throwing a cotton tank underneath kind of kills the image - it's like saying you can't quite commit to wearing this really sexy blouse you had the courage to buy in the first place.

The best thing we can think of is a camisole or a super thin, super low cut tank. So does this mean we have to buy a bunch of new tops to go with our tops? Any amazing top recycling ideas we're not aware of?

I like layering two sheer camisoles or blouses on top of each other. You still get the same effect but with a little more coverage. It works especially well with patterns, and if you have a pretty bra to wear just in case it peeks through, then it works especially well.

I have a cami that is the exact color of my skin which I normally wear under my sheer tops. My husband begs me to not wear anything, but seriously, I just can't - not when we're out at least. I'd love to hear other people's ideas though!

Then thank God they're a regular part of my wardrobe. Won't have to buy as much as usual come fall.

If you're going out and feeling saucy, just wear a deliciously lace-laden bra (extra points for incorporate a complimentary but contrasting color into the look).

For daytime, though, a silk camisole, preferably not charmeuse.

I usually wear lacy bodysuits with underwires with sheer stuff. It's sheer and delicate like a bra but too not full on. la perla do the best.

why not try a really lightweight modal tank in a complementary color, or in nude? they're so thin no one will know you cheated a bit :)

Chloe makes a great sheer very low cut tank, looks great underneath!

I favor bright colored bras that create a pretty contrast. I fortunately don't need industrial type bras that can be too heavy with a sheer top. I like calvin klein's thin lace bras with no underwire.

I own American Apparel tube dresses and bralettes in every color imaginable for just these situations! They're the "foundation garments" for our generation. Black and nude are my highest-frequency ones. They have this one shade of raspberry that makes every other color of the rainbow pop.
