Yet another weird debate got out of hand at the Fashionista office today (and via Instant Messenger):
The question: Wardrobe maintenance
Jazzi uses a steamer to get her clothes wrinkle-free. All day everyday. A habit she no doubt picked up during her time in the fashion closet.
Brett is in agreement – both even like the smell of the steamer.
Faran and Britt think they’re freaks – “Who has time for that?” (they iron, but rarely).
Natalie is shocked and appalled that anyone would actually spend time removing wrinkles instead of just popping things in the dryer for a few seconds – and opposite to Jazzi, she finds the smell of a steamer nauseating, no doubt due to her own time in the fashion closet.
So we come to you to solve this debate: Do you steam, iron, hang by the shower, or none of the above?
– JAZZI McGILBERT

dryer!
i like to throw mine in the dryer with a bounce sheet =]]
I maybe-might-possibly steam my clothing if a. I had the time. b. I actually had to look nice for school. Also at my job I am steaming 60% of the time, therefore I am naturally opposed to it.
To be honest, if it’s wrinkled I’ll pick something else to wear. But if I’m set on that outfit, I’ll just iron it if it’s something the dryer can’t handle. I don’t own a steamer, if I did, perhaps I’d have a similar addiction?
I dry clean EVERYTHING (and spend so much money on it) but in last minute pinches, I always hang stuff by the shower, and if that doesn’t work, dryer for a few minutes.
I would use the dryer if I had one available, but it would be $1.50 (highway robbery!) to “toss it in the dryer.” So, I steam. At work (I work retail) I hate the smell of the steamer, but at home I love it. I think its because the tank at work is huge and gets musty easier, whereas the tank on my home steamer is small and the water is always fresh.
I do not own an iron.
Yeah, anyone who’s had to steam, and thus burn themselves countless times, is likely opposed. I have used my travel steamer on trips — easier to operate than a hotel iron, but mostly, I iron at home. But only when absolutely necessary.
Nothing can compare to my steamer- and I do enjoy the smell! The dryer is my next choice if I’m in a pinch, but I do nor even own an iron- I can’t stand them.
I like my steamer…
I used to be a steamer, until I met wrinkle release spray. I spray whatever I want to wear, do my make up or dry my hair and the outfit’s ready! I’ve yet to find something it doesn’t work on – even a vintage wool pencil skirt. I can’t live without it now.
steam Steam STEAM!
but mine doesn’t smell… at all…
and time? it takes like 15 seconds to steam a shirt/sweater! I can’t stand wrinkles… makes even the best dressed woman look unkept…
I’m a college student. As long as I’m generally better-dressed than everyone else in a class, no one will notice a few wrinkles. If I need to steam an evening dress, which isn’t very often, I use the shower.
I adore my steamer. It’s huge and makes the most wonderful burbling noise. It’s much faster and easier than any of my other options.
I love my iron too, but I only use it for things that need to look pressed, like a crisp shirt.
I only own a travel iron/steamer. But I haven’t used it in months. I used to iron obsessively, but gave up after I realized that the clothes will stay perfectly wrinkle-less for about 5 minutes at most. Now I have a dryer, so I just hang everything when it’s still a bit wet and warm and that prevents basically all my clothes from any serious wrinkles.
Steamer. . every day. Sometimes twice a day. I never burn myself. It’s much much faster than ironing and you do much less damage to the garment.
depends on what it is/where i’m going. if i am home and the outfit isn’t super fancy, i will throw it in the dryer with a bounce sheet. that’s what happens most of the time!
I must say ironing or steaming are what suit me best although I have tried all of the choices. I really think it boils down to how much time you have and what type of material you are working with. Dev/Zays Mom!!!
I love my steamer! It only takes a short time to steam my clothes and it’s foolproof. I have a small cheap one that I bought at Walmart.
All of the above–usually dependent upon how late I am running in the morning!
A few years ago I decided to accept myself the way I am and only buy clothing that looks good un-ironed, un-steamed, and un-dry-cleaned. Not only do I tend to forget that stuff, but I found that my high maintenance clothing usually wilted before I did.
After working in retail, you get used to a steamer. I dont think I would ever iron again, I’d rather go wrinkled. Which really isnt a big deal. I just recently got that downy wrinkle release, so that may replace everything. The only thing about steaming that sucks is burning yourself
I haven’t ironed a single thing since I moved to New York 2 years ago.
Hang by the shower all the way!
I’ve got wrinkle release spray, too, but It can only do so much. Also, I hate the way my hands feel after smoothing the garment, so I have to wash them, which sucks ’cause I’m always running late anyway.
But maybe my spray is lousy? I believe it’s Downy (a whitish bottle with a purple label). Anyone know of a better one?
I can’t remember the last time I used an iron and I don’t own a steamer (though I have thought about buying one).
Oh, and if a hem (denim, especially) is flipped up I take my straightener to it. It’s probably not great for the clothes, but my stuff can take it.
downy wrinkle release spray all the way
@Ginge: I get this unbelieveable, basically generic brand spray from Dollar General/Family Dollar…I don’t know if there is one convenient to you, but it’s worth it. I don’t even do the whole spread thing – just hang, spray and come back about 15 min later. It doesn’t leave a weird feel and smells like classic fabric softener. At $1.75 for a Windex sized bottle, it’s my secret weapon. If you can’t find it, let me know. I buy bulk and am willing to share! In my experience, this spray works better than Downy and for the price it can’t be beat.
Ugh I loathe ironing! AND steaming. Aren’t steamers horribly expensive? I only use them on shoots and always burn myself. I’d like some of that wrinkle spray though, anyone know if you can get it in London?
